What to do with a 2007 M109R with an engine knock?

Hey there,

I have had alot of issues with getting my bike back to running condition. I had the clutch rebuilt, and other work done to get the motorcycle up and running. Only to find out there was a serious knocking in the front cylinder. So I took it a friend and he tore it down to determine where the noise was coming from. He found serious wear in the cylinders and pistons. It is making the knocking noise. So I am at the point of what do I do with a motorcycle that needs a new engine. The bike has 65000 miles on it. It has a custom paint job that is specifically mine. Any suggestions would be helpful. We already dumped more money in this bike than we cared. If we can fix for less than $500 then we can do that, but any more than that is not feasible.

Thanks for your help,

Hello Dragon0688, there's a member of this forum who I know can/will fix what ails your 9. However, just as Poseidon stated...it's going to cost you a great deal more than $500. It could cost anywhere from$1500 to $3000, but once he's finished with it you'll have a fabulous running/functioning motor. His member name is "FuturR" aka Matt. His contact number is (317) 507-0940, and he's located in the Indianapolis, IN. area. Give him a call. You'll be AMAZED at his level of knowledge and expertise regarding the M109R in its entirety.

That is a shame, it is a nice looking bike but so custom to you that it may be hard to get what you are looking for selling the bike as a whole.

Parting it out may be your best best, but that could take some time and you may be left holding on to some or most of the bike for quite some time.

Just out of curiosity, how much would you be asking for the entire bike as is....if the price is right I may be interested.

Just an FYI here....are you ABSOLUTELY SURE there is definitely a "knock" and its not the normal sounds of this Motor? These bikes make all sorts of unappealing sounds that have been mistaken as Knocks in the past. If you don't have any experience
With this mechanic so that you have complete Trust in him i would find a mechanic that is very familiar with this bike and get a second opinion.

The OP stated in his initial post that he’s not willing to put more than $500 additional into his bike. Therefore, buying another used 9, or having his motor rebuilt or repaired costing more than $500 is out of the question for him. He also stated that he doesn’t have much time to get rid of the bike. Perhaps his best option is to unload the bike quickly at a very low cost, due to the likely possibility that the motor will need some extensive work. The bike is likely an 06’ to 08’ model. So, the question now is...what is an 06’ to 08’ model M109R worth with a motor that may need to be either repaired, rebuilt, or replaced?

What do you all think it’s worth, (with the custom paint job not being a factor in the price)?

Well "Worth" is all relative, depending on who you are talking to, but this is how I break it down in my mind.

I can buy an '06 M109 with 30k or less miles on it in running condition for $5,000 or less all day long.

Subtract $3000,00 for parts and labor to rework or swap out the motor, brings us to $2000,00.

Subtract $800.00 to ship the bike from VA to FL, brings us to $1200.00

Now we have a running bike with a custom paint job that fits only the OP.....Subtract $1500.00 to prep and repaint entire bike.

Looks like we are at -$300.00...... LOL

But the bike is worth something....we all know that.....the big question is How Much and to Who.

If it were not for the custom paint job I would say you could get $1000.00 for it all day long and move it quick, but with the custom paint.....I am not so sure.

I don't really have a tons of space, and I do not have a tremendous amount of time

I don't really have a tons of space, and I do not have a tremendous amount of time

These words are pointing to that buying one extra bike, and parting the old one is out of the question.

What I would do is to advertise it for sale as is, pricing it to the lowest acceptable money OP is willing to sell it.

It will certainly take some time before it sells, but also it will acquire some time in which the situation

of the OP might change,... JMHO

It would be a crying shame to strip off and repaint that custom job you have on your bike.
Is that paint job custom only to you or is "2nd Thief Riders" a group in your area?
If it is a group, is there no one else in the group that has a 9 that would be interested in purchasing the bike from you in order to get your custom painted parts?

I had not thought of this. We do have a brother that rides in the ministry. Not sure if he would be interested or not, but looking into it.
Another option I am exploring is salvage bikes. I just need a good engine, and the young man working on it is doing some research now.

Thanks for all of the ideas guys. This is why i love getting on this site. I found my bike 9 years ago on this site.

Godspeed.

It's wear in the front cylinder. Had it pulled apart and confirmed the engine wear. At some point I burned up all of my oil and ran it with no lube. It has brand new tires. Brand new clutch plates. It is currently at my brother-in-laws house. I am headed out there in a couple of weeks to take some pics. Thanks everyone for your help and input.

These bikes do something with the oil, not sure what though. Friend has an 06 with only around 14,000 miles. Changed his oil in 2016, and only got 1.25 quarts out on the drain. Hot engine, let it drain for awhile, held it upright, etc. 1.25 quarts out of a bike that holds near 4. Told him he'd better start paying attention to it, or he's going to trash his motor.
