I did it to mine and it came out great. It took me about 3 hours and only cost me $10 at the local welding shop to have them weld the stock tips back on. It is still really mellow at idle because of the cat converter and SET valve but it sounds killer with the throttle open. As for earplugs, I don't see how people ride without them anyway, the wind noise alone drives me crazy and I can't hear what is going on with my bike as well as I can with them in. Here is how my bike turned out
