Hey all. This isn't a sympathy-seeking post, just a friendly
reminder. I am a motorcycle police officer in Virginia, and
was t-boned at an intersection yesterday. I'm kinda banged
up, but nothing is broken. This was a relatively low speed
crash (maybe 30-35mph, if even). I was just starting to run
code (lights and sirens) to try to catch a speeding vehicle,
thought I had the intersection cleared, but one vehicle, a
Lexus SUV, did not see me. It hit my motorcycle just forward
of my right leg (thank God), sending me over the handlebars
and windshield. The first thing to hit the pavement: my head!
I know there are many who are reading this who live in a state
where there is no requirement to wear a helmet. I'm telling
you first hand that I am typing this because I was wearing one.
I hit the pavement pretty hard, head first. My neck is pretty
jarred from the impact, but the helmet saved my life, without
a doubt.
Please, fellow riders, wear a helmet, even if you're just riding
around the corner to a friend's house. Like I said, my crash was
relatively low speed, but I strongly feel that I would be dead
right now were I not wearing a helmet.
I know there are public service announcements galore, and
people get sick of hearing it, but I wouldn't feel at peace with
myself if I didn't post this thread. I only technically know
about a dozen of you guys and gals on here, but I love and care
about you all. Please ride safe, and strap that helmet down!
