I made these small domes clear decals to for on the side of the tank. my legs rest there and i noticed some slight scratches in the paint. I'm not 100% happy with how they look. but to save the paint i'll stand it..

3M makes an clear very thin adheasive that would apply the same way BUT you'd barely notice it was there and it's removable.
Some companies use it and call it Invisibra. The put this stuff on $100,000+ cars so it's gotta be quality.

It may look neater too.

This is a very good product. I have it applied to both of my automobiles. You can hardly notice it. Stops the paint from being scratched and chipping from small stones. Have a certified shop install the mask and it comes with a guarantee not to harm your finish or the company will repaint your vehicle.
Most striping/automotive detailing shops can do this, there are a few brands now, 3M, X-pel, etc.

All wear areas( rear half of tank, leading edges of tank/front fender/nacelle, all side trim and the blue portion of the rear fender) on my bike are done you can see it here, oh wait no you can't. ;)
