Wisconsin just passed a noise ordinance for motorcycles. :verymad: I really like the looks of the Sideburner, but I've been seeing that a few people here say they are pretty loud. Now, does anyone else here have them installed and also have a law for loud pipes? How loud are they? I know how to keep it quiet going through town and all, but I just don't want :cop:Johnny Law:cop: a reason to stop me. Are there any baffles in them?

They have a baffle in them, and I'm not sure it's even removable. But they are loud, a few degrees louder than something like my Swepts are with stock baffles in them. I've ridden with a few that have them and you don't want to ride beside of and a little behind them.

I'm pretty sure it's just a perforated baffle too, so kind of a straight through pipe.

347.39  Mufflers.

(1) No person shall operate on a highway any motor vehicle subject to registration unless such motor vehicle is equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise or annoying smoke. This subsection also applies to motor bicycles.

(2) No muffler or exhaust system on any vehicle mentioned in sub. (1) shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device nor shall there be installed in the exhaust system of any such vehicle any device to ignite exhaust gases so as to produce flame within or without the exhaust system. No person shall modify the exhaust system of any such motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

(3) In this section, "muffler" means a device consisting of a series of chambers of baffle plates or other mechanical design for receiving exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine and which is effective in reducing noise.

I've heard from numerous bikers, tavern owners, ABATE members, and the local sheriff dept (Pulled over for speeding and he warned me about my pipes on my Suzuki Intruder 1500 saying police are cracking down)
My county, and Milwaukee county, and maybe others have got decibel readers now.... ABATE is trying to fight this at a state level.

every now and again when the weather starts getting warm in chicago they announce that they are passing and enforcing new laws regulating motorcycle exhaust volume levels. they claim to have decibel meters that will measure them and ticket any offenders. in the past 15 years, i have yet to see them really enforce it. there are thousands of motorcycles in the downtown area on warm summer nights and i have heard some very, very loud pipes on some bikes and have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for them. i'm not saying that it is not possible. my feeling is that it is done more as a scare tactic.

personally, i like a moderate pipe. it doesn't have to be crazy loud or ovedone. what IS important to me is that sounds nice. i prefer a low mean "grumble" as opposed to anything that is just loud. i currently have the scorpion tips and chose those for their aesthetics to the bike. however, i wish they were deeper and throatier in their sound. i'm also looking for a new exhaust setup to be done in the fall.

All depends on if you are being obnoxious with the sound. Putting through town shouldn't be a problem with most baffled exhausts.

I really like the looks of the sideburner and the cannons, but cannons are WAY out of my price range right meow. Are there any pipes that don't have the wispy sound on decel?

Maybe the Scorpion Tips will work for your situation. They sound very good and have a pretty deep rumble to them.

I think the decel sound is more of a characteristic of the 109 engine than the pipe.

i think it is impossible to tell what the exhaust actually sounds like from a video. the video itself distorts the true sound that you would hear in person and computer speakers aren't great either. might be best to ask any forum members that are close to you w/ the exhaust(s) that you like, to meetup and have an opportunity to listen to them close up. that's what i did when i had narrowed down my selections when doing an exhaust mod. there are quite a few more options now than there were back then.

i'm leaning towards the cannon myself but i can't get a hold of rainey in order to ask him some questions. might have to go with a shortened VP.

i have the tips. be happy to have you hear them sometime. i have baffles in mine also. perhaps you can hear them if i get the "quad-city ride" confirmed for may.

Too loud,in my oppinion anyway, here's a clip of my bike with sideburner mounted, they have a very "hard" sound to them. I have switched mine for a velocity pro instead

i dont think the sideburners would be to loud as long as there not shortened. you could also find a db killer for another pipe possibly? just make sure its the same size (thinking its 2 1/2") most db killers ive seen can be had with a flange type mount which would work great with the sideburners due to the lip aorund the baffle (if you can call it that?).

I just put the Sideburner on mine. Love the sound!! A very deep agressive tump. some people have said its sounds like a "funny car." (i dont know)

Did measure the decibles on it at idle with an app on my Iphone. knowing it cant be that acurate i got a max measurement of 97db. at about 24" from the back right side.
we have the noise bylaw here aswell. Im not that worried. just pull the clutch or creep by if you see the cops....
