We nearly had a Methane Tax........... It was called A Fart tax, And applied to all head of cattle. The Farmers fought it and it wasn't passed in Govt. LOL, Pun Intended. TRUE FACT, 3 years ago, it would have killed the farmers.
What do people mean by 'fart tax'?
The term 'fart tax' has often come up in the news. It referred to a tax on farmers for the methane emissions produced by their livestock. This is an odd choice of term, however, because animals actually belch, not fart, methane out of their digestive systems.
Methane is a gas that is naturally produced by bacteria that digest plant material. The process is anaerobic (i.e. the methane is produced without the bacteria breathing oxygen). Methane is emitted into the atmosphere when bacteria are at work - for example, it occurs in swamps, the stomachs of livestock, in rubbish dumps and in rice paddies.
The chemical formula for methane is CH4, which means that one atom of carbon is connected with four atoms of hydrogen. Methane is 25 times more effective than carbon dioxide (CO2) in trapping heat in our atmosphere.
