Well, we decided on new bikes for the department. Should be
ordering them in the next couple weeks, and they'll take about
six weeks to arrive. Hopin' to have them out on the road by
mid-February or so. I can't wait! The higher-ups were pushing
hard for Harleys, but thankfully we were able to convince them
that the Kawasaki Concours is a better choice by far.

It's a 1400cc, liquid cooled, inline 4, DOHC.
Compared to Harley's 1600cc, air-cooled, v-twin.

155 horses compared to Harley's 110ish.

102lbft of torque @ 6200rpm compared to Harley's [email protected]

Positive Neutral: No matter how fast or hard you slam up the gear
shift lever, it will always go into neutral unless you briefly release,
then shift into second. This is especially helpful for us in situations
where we have to park and dismount quickly (foot pursuit, etc.).
It pretty much goes without saying that Harley doesn't offer that.

Much higher output alternator than Harley to handle all the accessories
required by law enforcement (lights, siren, air horn, RADAR, LIDAR,
heated seats/grips/gear, etc.).

Tighter turning radius than Harleys.

Traction control standard. Harley doesn't even offer it.

Motorized adjustable windshield. Not offered by Harley.

Clutch job (parts, fluids, and labor) costing less than $400 and just a couple hours of downtime. Harley's cost $1200.

It weighs approximately 135lbs less than the Harley, which is quite
significant when you're throwing that weight around eight hours a day.

1/4 time is [email protected] Harley's is [email protected] time is 2.9 seconds. Harley wouldn't even post theirs.

0-100 time is 9.7 seconds. Harley's was close to 30 seconds.

The acceleration times are obviously an important element for us, since
we are frequently going from a standstill to at least 60mph to catch
violators.

Anyway, there aren't many pics of the 2011 Concours on the web yet,
but I found a couple. We are getting ours painted all black with
silver markings, and blue LEDS (clear when off). In addition, we are
purchasing Shark Evoline 2 helmets, painted all black (they can be
worn as a full face or open face). Can't wait! Goodbye BMW!!

KevinT, hopefully your department will go with a good tire when the stock bridgestones wear out. The Michelin PR2 and the Pirelli Angel ST are the preferred tires on the concours forum. I run the PR2's and really like them, plus they will last almost twice as long as the bridgestones, also they provide more traction, and better feedback.

LOL although just a "show" bike for various community policing events...

our department has yet to wake up and stop sniffing the HD glue....

I Like the kwai..but I really hope we go BMW...used to ride the previous generation R1150RT and it's a mighty fine bike.....

We're on Beemers now. Lemme tell ya: the Concours will run cirlces
around the Beemer in top speed, acceleration, maintenance cost and
frequency, and creature comforts.

That will be a nice bike. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I'm waiting for the new BMer touring bike to hit the market. I want to trade mine in for a the new 1600cc BMW. They just don't have them on the market yet.

The PoPo here ride HDs at present. Think when we started the moto PoPo back up here they had BMWs and that was because they practically gave the city the bikes. Who knows what they'll get when the next time comes around.

Our state PoPo has Kawasakis I think. Not a lot of them.

If they're going to cost that much, I'll be waiting for a used one to hit the streets in a few years. Or I might even think about a 11' Victory Cross Country.
