Well, my "mechanic" has had my bike for weeks and tells me that he cannot get them to fit after many attempts... i would advise you to take your bike someplace where they have had some experience putting these tubes on. Last night I sent him the [PDF] instructions from Kewel Metal and asked that he talk to Big Joe for help but I was told today that he put the forks back together without the tubes because he still couldn't figure it out. So here's what I did... after speaking to Jerry (at LiquidPain), I ordered a set of SUMO X, one piece fork tubes, chrome @ $459.00. He and others have nothing but good things to say about them and I am so #@!**ing frustrated at this point, I am going to do it myself. My bad experience(s) will likely not be what will happen to you but regardless of what you do... good luck!

do you have to buy the upper and lower forks covers. dose anyone know the best place to buy fork covers. How hard are they to install for the mechanical deprived people.
depending on where or what brand of fork covers you buy determines what you will need to get. if you buy the fork tube covers from DLP or Raw Design, you will end up needing the upper and lower fork tube covers. if you go that route, buy from DLP since Raw Design's can be a bit overpriced.

however, if you want a one-piece look then the sumo-x fat fork tube covers are the way to go.

Mine were Kewl Metal 2-piece. Installation went smooth with no issues. It was the 1st time I ever pulled the handlebars and forks off a cycle. Direct Line had the best price and I like to support the site sponsor.

I've had the Kewl Metal Fat fork kit on my 109 for a few years now. I also had them on my VTX. The install is straight forward and really very easy.

1) Remove front brake calipers.
2) Remove lower pinch bolts
3) Remove front axle
4) Remove lower triple tree pinch bolts
5) Remove upper tree pinch bolts
6) Slide fork legs out
7) Slide "O" rings onto lower part of fork tube. Slide Kewl metal lower tube onto fork leg.
8) Slide fork tube back into lower and upper trip trees.
9) Put in lower trip tree pinch bolts and snug up. Leave upper trip tree pinch bolts out for now since you need to install up cover still.

Upper Fork Covers

1) Remove the center nut that holds the upper trip tree to the neck. You should now be able to lift the upper trip tree off.
2) slide kewl rubber "O" rings onto upper fork.
3) now slide on the Top Kewl metal cover.
4) Put the upper trip tree back on sliding over the top of the fork tubes.
5) Put in the upper trip tree pinch bolts and snug them up.

Now you can go back and tighten pinch bolts to torque spec. Put your wheel back on and torque all bolts to spec.

I went from memory on this, it has been some time ago that I did the install on these but I can tell you it took me all of an hour or so to do. If your mechanic can not do this job, I suggest you find a new mechanic. Very easy install.

I just put these on my 9 about 2 weeks ago. Instructions that came with the tubes were very good. Quality of these are really nice. Not no sheet metal thin covers, But some MEATY metal.
I'm impressed and happy with the results
