the 9 has 1'' bars right i was getting some grips and the guy at this store seems to think they are 7/8

the non-grip part is 1 1/4

so the kuryakyn grips for the 1'' is what i need

Yup, 1" is what you need. These don't use a throttle sleeve either, the connections for the throttle cables are built into the end of the grip.
