Well, I just got it fixed and it was the gearshaft shaft return spring. It was mushy.

See how the ends of the spring are touching. I had 3/8 inch on each side. No wonder it would not change gears until I pushed the gearshifter back down, clutched and then shifted each time.

There is a gasket that needs replacing if you change it.

Glad that was what caused the problem and you got it fixed, Doc. I wonder what made it lose its tension?
