Factory Pro Shift Star

Hey guys, I just purchased my first M109R, a 2009 with 6,440 miles on it. I fell in love with this bike the moment I sat on it and couldn't wait to get it home! I joined this site shortly after I knew it was going to be mine. After looking through the various topics on the forums, I have a few questions hopefully some of you can answer.

1. I've read about and experienced the clunkiness of the shifter, and I see the common recommended solution is the installation of the Factory Pro Shift Star. How hard is this to install? I've worked on cars for 20 years, but when it comes to bikes, let's just say I'm less than confident.

2. Does anyone know of a reputable repair shop near Akron Ohio?....you know, just in case :p

3. I have also experienced the famous shudder that so many M109R riders have talked about. Some people say they feel it in the clutch, but I feel it more toward the rear tire.

Thoughts?

It is super simple to change out but be sure to torque the arm and star to the correct foot Lbs. I screwed up the conversion from inch Lbs to Foot Lbs (My torque wrench is in inch Lbs) and over torqued them both causing a issue where the trans would not go into neutral. The condition was corrected by torquing them to the correct foot lbs.

Instructions come with the star but here they are so you can judge how hard it is. The shudder is addressed by doing the push pin mod which I have not done yet but will be doing soon. Think I will just replace the clutch plates while I am in there.

Thanks....I will look into it.
Congrats and your Bike and Welcome to the Forum. These guys are full of knowledge

I think your backward in your statement. 1foot pound=12 inch pounds. Being so how did you manage to over torque the bolt using an inch pound wrench and then go on to correctly torque the bolt with a foot pound wrench that was OVER TORQUED using the inch pound wrench?
Hey guys...interesting read and not to hijack the thread but I have a 2013 and read here that this isn't needed on mine as Suzuki addressed this....and I correct in stating that?

Thanks OGPAULG! This bike is amazing. Took it on a 70 mile cruise today, and when I got home, I wanted to go right back out!

I've been reading quite a bit and this certainly will be the place I come looking first!

I have a '12 that I still have not done this to....I do however know of others that say that there is still an improvement to be had - as they noticed with theirs....

I mistakenly doubled the conversion.
Where can I find the right torque for the shift star and the 10mm arm bolt?
Welcome to the forum. In the service manual there is a generic chart for torques for various bolt sizes. Here's a file of the common items on the bike, but the ones you're looking for aren't in it. Listed just in case you need others.

And if you need the service manual, it's here:

There is a lot of other good info down in the Files section of the forum. I looked through the manual and couldn't find a torque spec for those two items, just how they go together. But the generic spec should be close enough.

I just did some more looking. Did you get instructions with yours? The ones on Factory Pro's website has the torque specs for the cam stopper plate bolt and the cam stopper bolt. They recommend both be loctited too.

I was going to link the pdf file for it but it opens and won't let me link it. Just google Factory Pro Shift Star M109R Install and it should pop up.
