Cracked heat shield, Sideburner

I bought my bike about 2 weeks ago, 2006 Silver. It has the Sideburner exhaust. I thought it had a bit of a metalic rattle when you let off the gas. Sounded like a loose exhaust pipe. I checked the header bolts, and all were tight, but i noticed a 1/2" crack in the heat shield, on the front pipe, 2/3 way around the bend. I've ridden it several times since, and now the crack is 1" long.
Can the heat shield be removed? Should i drill a small hole at end of crack to stop it? If I drill small hole to stop crack, can I JB weld back side to keep from rattling, or vibrating? Any other ideas?

Thanks ,,, John.
