5th gear issue

Hi Everyone,

New to the site but enjoy reading all the threads on the M109R. It's a great learning source being a new owner of the Suzuki brand. My problem started with the Tubular Nut becoming loose and leaving me stranded . I did the repair myself following the instructions to the letter. Now my 2016 M109R won't accelerate in 5th gear and only revs high if I push it to hard. All my other gears are fine when shifting with the bike having only 6k miles. Looking at the clutch plates all looked good- no wear or burn marks on the plates. I'm certain the plates went back in the correct order when reinstalling. I readjusted the clutch pin accordingly but it still hasn't resolved the issue. What am I missing here? Did I overlook something? The bike was running good in 5th gear before the Tubular Nut issue. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. You haven't put car oil in it , have you ?

Welcome to the forum. It won't accelerate at all in 5th, even gradually?

It will very gradually...

No car oil..only motorcycle I'm confused why the other gears seem ok...why is the 5th slipping?

It will accelerate in 5th very gradually...if the road is flat or going downhill. Going up hill or really twist the throttle...forget it. it only revs higher with no acceleration. Is it possible I mistakenly place the clutch plate in backwards? I'm almost positive all the plates went back in the same exact same order.. no other gear has this issue except 5th,
Your clutch is slipping. It is more noticeable when you are in a higher gear at a lower rpm. We usually test clutches by doing that up a hill, which is when it will show the most. Now, with that being said, I assume you followed the video from YouTube with the guy wearing a hat and has a beard. Nice guy, but the one thing he never mentioned was to do the pin adjustment when in there. I mentioned it in his comments and he said he did it but forgot to mention. I have a full how to video on the clutch and it shows that in there. Also, check at your lever and make sure you have enough free play, as many times that will pull the cable and cause slip under hard acceleration.

Thank you for the video- I did readjust the clutch pin as directed. It initially had no play in it at all- but I followed the video to readjust it. The only logical sense is somehow I placed the clutch plate in backwards and that's causing the issue. My clutch handle also seems good with no issues..it's not overly tight.
After reviewing the video again- I think I see where i messed up and will take a closer look at the clutch plate sequence again to ensure I have them in the right order. Your video is a great help! I'll start on it tonight after work and will keep you posted. Thanks again!
Glad it could help. Also do the adjustment inside.

Great video! In it, you say when adjusting the lock nut to make a half to 3/4 turn before tightening with the lock nut but in the service manual, it says to make 1 full turn. Do you see issues when going 1 full turn?

Thanks! Nope, you are fine anywhere in there. I have always done 1/2 to .75 for probably 100 clutches are more with no issues. 1 just gives a little more free play before engagement and that is fine. What page in the manual are you looking because the older manuals don't have that and there was a supplement out.

Thanks! I found this info on page 3-111 in all the versions of the manuals that I have.
It is also in an "Additional service manual" with the subject:
"This bulletin is to inform you of a modification to the clutch cable play adjustment procedure.
Due to the high engine torque and heavy vehicle weight of the VZR1800, correct clutch cable
play adjustment is important to prevent clutch slippage, particularly under heavy load. Inspect
and adjust the clutch cable play during pre-delivery inspection and periodic maintenance using
the following procedure. Insert a copy of each of the attached pages in your dealership's
VZR1800 Service Manual at the appropriate page."

Yep, it is in the manual on that page. I actually never saw it as we always went by the addendum. I have always done 3/4 and never had an issue. I can't remember but I think we did that as it will take your release point on the lever and move it in more so it doesn't engage as far out.
Hey everyone.

The 5th gear slip has been resolved. The clutch plate sequence was out of order causing the problem. Thanks to the excellent video I was able to piece it all back together and the buke is running like new again. I couldn;t be happier. Thanks again for all the help and advice. You guys rock!!

Will this adjustment (right side of engine case) prevent the clutch lever from having to be pulled all the way to the left grip or would this adjustment be made on the left side at the clutch pin and cable adjustments?

Bought my '06 3 weeks ago with "new clutch" and it doesn't like to disengage until the lever is touching the left grip and when motorcycle has been run it will still have forward pressure. Very exciting development after maiden voyage with wife on back!

Thank you in advance.

It can help with that. As the push pin moves out it moves the pressure plate outwards, releasing pressure on the clutch. So as the clutch plates get worn the amount the push pin has to move increases. That means you pull the lever further to get it to disengage. Usually you can get it to work with adjustment at the lever, you might try that first before going into the clutch. Just make sure you leave plenty of slack in the lever.
