Once apon a time I was searching parts for my 9 and stumbled across the fact that there is a military tank called an "M109" howitzer. (yes I know its actually the cannon but they call the tank M109). So every time I see a tank on display somewhere I stop and check it out but they are always M60's. I searched to find an M109 and only came up with two in the US on public display. One is out in Lawton, OK at US Army Field Artillery Museum but you can't get your bike next to it for a photo op. The other is in Smithton, IL and its close enough to the road to get to it.
So I planned on riding down home labor day weekend, a 1700 mile trip, and swing by and get the pic on the way down. After months of waiting I made it down there, didn't get caught riding in the grass and got the most bad a$$ picture of side-by-side M109's I've ever seen.
Nice pics. The M109 is actually an Artillery piece of equipment and not a tank. In the Army tanks are part of the Armor branch. I believe there is a M109 in display at FT Hood, TX at the museum there also but cant remember for sure. FT Sill, OK is home to the US Army Artillery Branch and if you want to get close to one that would be where I go. Not sure if you can or have access to get on base though?
