Default Model Help... variance and differences

Seems to be my luck with bikes. My last one was an inbetween model also.
I have purchased a 2nd hand M109. Went to Suzuki Australia with the VIN number to confirm year model and model number.
    They tell me it is a 2010, VZR1800Z L0
    Cool thinks I. Easy.
Nope. Go to Suzuki Parts Monster - No 2010 VZR1800, no M109 listed.
Has the gear indicator like the 2011s. Can't find the L0 listed in the models on the parts fiche.

Can anyone help with background or insider knowledge?
Seems to me the 2010 is actually a transition model between the 2009 and the 2011. The Yr of MFG is 2010 and early 2010 but wondering if it isn't a 2011 transition.

    Thanks in advance.

The only thing I'm aware of is that the 2010 was available everywhere but the U.S. Know of nothing else. Maybe it wasn't available in Australia as well for that year?

Obviously it was a available in AU, the zero at the end of the model number is the indicator for the model year.

Depending on what part(s) you're looking for, it may not matter much.

    My understanding is:
2006-present = All mechanical parts are the same except for an updated clutch pack in 2011 I believe.

The only other change beyond paint and stickers since 2006 is the minor cosmetic refresh in 2011.

Others will no doubt confirm or clarify this further, very shortly.

My big thing is I'm looking at a TRE, primarily the HealTech x-TRE to keep the gear indicator. It's hard to confirm which model I actually have. Luckily the guys at HealTech have sent me the instructions and my mechanic mate is going to check to see if it will fit mine or if the config is 2009 type.

You can double check this, but I think the 2010 is the exact same as the 2011 that was sold in the US. Even the LE edition for 2010 had the same color scheme as the 2011 LE. I am 99% sure that this is correct. Welcome to the group.

Mostly. The 2006 model year only, the engine side covers are plastic. They changed them to metal in 07. This includes the covers at the top of the cylinders for the plugs, meatl where mine are plastic. 07 up weigh 7 pounds more than the 06.

Right right and now that reminds me of another post mentioning the rear grab rails had similar changes - from metal to tin+rubber.

As for the TRE - I don't have one but many do and we will surely hear from them shortly.

If your bike came from Suzuki with the tac located in the head light bucket and with a gear indicator then you would use the same X-TRE as the 2011.

    http://www.meancycles.com/store/part...?partID=225512

It seems most of these parts are coming from the USA and we did not get the 2010 model here, which is why they list the part starting at 2011 model year.

The big chrome engine side covers and the sparken plug covers? Really? Likely a previous owner changed them out? I never heard that Suzuki went back to plastic. Know for a fact they changed to metal in 07, cause I waited til the 07's came out before buying my 06. Wanted to compare the white 07 to the silver 06. Liked the silver better.

Also Jerzee Devil told me what was required to swap out the plastic spark plug covers for the metal ones. You have to buy the mounting brackets as well, they're different than the plastic mounting brackets.

The lower covers on my 2016 are metal but the covers at the top of the cylinder heads are black glossy plastic.

Plastic ones cost $55 - $60 each new.

Metal ones cost $197 each new.

I have a set of metal ones squirreled away and will take $50 each for them or $175 for the set of 4 (Buyer pays shipping) if anyone is looking for a metal set.

I don't like unround numbers, I'll just make it $200.00 even. No biggie. The $19 was going to make it $194 anyways. Pay for your gas for the trip!

One of my plastic ones, the chrome finish is ripply. Heat must have caused the "chrome" to become unbonded, or something. Been wanting to do the metal ones for like two years.

If you find a need to replace the 4th plastic one to sell the set, I have 1 plastic cover also. (its the larger of the 2 sizes)

I don't figure on selling them. May strip them of the fake chrome finish and experiment with some different color variations. Or just deep six them!

They just push onto rubber mounts

    Okay, thanks man.

As to the plastic upper pieces, I thought all four were identical. I recall when I took mine off to do the sparken plugs, I got them mixed up on the garage floor, but had no issues putting them on anyways. Or are you saying the metal ones are a little larger than the plastic ones, or vice versa?

pretty sure I did the same thing when I changed plugs and they all fit back on. But maybe that's why they bubble is if they are stretched on the wrong cylinder

The metal ones are 2 different sizes, you put a large and small on each side of the bike.

One is just a bit larger (wider) than the other.
