I know she's an old post, but with the riding season on us, I figure why not. I am in Welland Ontario, my buddy Mike is also on here, but he said he has been having issues getting the page to load on his Phone.

Hey Brad. I'm in Barrie and have been "casually flirting" with the idea of maybe attending MAM also. Biggest thing for me is how far it would be for us from here to the starting line - not necessarily the physical distance, I welcome the ride time, but the time off work needed to cover it. Out of curiosity, are you planning to ride or trailer down?

If I trailer it would be to Cincinnati and then drive from there. Another board member lives there, would pick him up along the way. Riding vs trailer would be decision make as week before. I have done both, trailer mostly because tires were near end of life. But have new ones on now.

    Thumbs up I`m Back !

I left the fold a few years back to spend my riding time in a 2 up config (got an Indian Roadmaster).
But I got a new toy for Christmas (a 2014 9) and I am ready to rejoin the 9er world.
I am looking forward to reconnecting with some old friends.

Hello all. Moved to Richmond Hill from Chicago about a year ago and sold my 9. Now that I am more stable here, going to look at a few used 109s today and this weekend. It seems as if the process is more in depth here when buying a used bike from a private party. Any advice to give this new Canadian when going to look and hopefully buy a bike soon? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

The process here isn't too bad, but I'm not sure how easy it is in the States, so here's my best attempt to describe it.

Once you've found the bike you want, the things you will need:
    1. Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) - this gives you the owner history of the bike as well as doubles as a Bill of Sale - about $20 from a Service Ontario office, you just need to give them the VIN
    2. Safety Certificate - can be obtained from a shop that is registered with the Ministry of Transportation as a Motor Vehicle Inspection Station (MVIS) - market price varies, expect to pay $100 or so
    3. License plate - obviously - don't know cost
    4. License plate sticker - $42
    5. Possibly a Temporary License plate sticker - i think $15 - this would be needed in the event the bike isn't Safetied when you buy it

Usually the seller will ask you to get the UVIP package, so they don't incur the cost or time to go to a Service Ontario office to get it.
You will see the name of all owners, the city in which they registered it, and the date and mileage it was registered at. Ideally, the last owner should be the person you're buying it from.
Some sellers may sell the bike Safetied or AS IS...meaning you have to get the Safety. This is where you would need the Temporary plate sticker...it will allow you to ride it for 10 days in order to take it to a shop to get Safetied.
If the seller is willing to Safety it, this will save you some time running around...and the $15.

As the UVIP is also a Bill of Sale, it has the Ministry's retail and wholesale value of the bike printed on the first page. This is what they deem it's worth, and had no real bearing on the sale price.
If the bike is old enough, then those values are $0.
They use these values to calculate the 13% tax you will pay on the bike at the time you register it.
If the bike has $0 on the UVIP, then they will tax you on whatever you write down as the sale price on it (hint hint wink wink)...just don't make it obvious you're super lowballing the sale price.

    Welcome abuman1

those two pretty much summed it up..I have a # somewhere for a bike safety guy that comes to you and is cheaper than taking it to any dealer...also have a bike trailer if you need it to pick it up and save the hassle of a temporary plate, although they might deduct that from the cost of the real plate, can’t remember for sure..

great to see another 9 in the hood !!

join us for the spring meet and greet if your dialed in with a new machine

Definitely take that number from Stavros, that's a great idea. Our bikes are pretty much safe, maybe breaks.

If you need transport I have a kendon trailer, you can either borrow, or I can go with you to pick up.

Thanks everyone. Very much appreciated. You guys are great. The one I was looking at Kijiji just sold yesterday so I will keep looking and will have something soon hopefully, I can't describe how much I miss having this bike in my garage. I will definitely reach out about someone to safety the bike and also to get it trailered over. Thanks again all. Would love to meet some of you guys and ride when the weather warms up.

As a second option there is a shop my neighbor owns off Yonge by the Wilson Niblett dealer (Yonge and Elgin Mills area).
He safeties bikes as well...it's an automotive shop.

Thanks so much for the detailed info and for taking the time. Way easier to figure out than trying to google all this. Ill refer back to this once I find a bike I can't say no to, hopefully soon.
