I looked at a 2007 M109R at a dealership yesterday. Exceptionally clean and well cared for. Has all the goodies, pipes, fuel mgmt, usual cosmetics (debaged etc), LED, custom windscreen, adult owned for around 8K. My concern is with P&P heads it's making gobs of power. With those miles should I be concerned with a shortened life on the crank? I'd like to find the folks that did the work to see if any mods were done for extra robustness on the bottom end but barring that, what do you think?
My other thought is to find a low mileage relatively stock bike for less and just do the usual chip, pipe, intakes, mapped, dyno and done. Plenty of giddy up for me. Thanks in advance for you opinions. I'm on the hunt.
I may be off on this, and if so I'm sure someone will correct me, but I don't think porting and polishing alone means it makes a lot more power...it probably makes a bit more because it'll breathe a little better, but I highly doubt it makes so much more than you have to worry about it over-stressing the crank or other internal engine parts...
How do you know they were ported and polished?
It would take a lot to pull a motor, not saying that it wasnt done just based on the pic I would be a little suspicious.
I don't see P&P making gobs of power. And what are they claiming to be gobs of power? Sounds like they are trying to recoup the money they have tied up in it. P&P work would be expensive to do properly. But would not do that much for a stock engine. And by stock I mean stock cams, compression and fuel system. A pipe and fuel controller would not make that big of a difference with P&P heads in the power category.

Porting and polishing has no effect on the longevity or reliability of an engine. Porting typically refers to port matching the intake with the intake side of the head where the. Castings for each don't match each other perfectly which causes turbulance or irrigular flow on combustible air fuel mixture.
They will open up the intake ports on each side and also match gasket size and polish the surface to perfection to increase the the volume of air fuel mixture and smooth out the air flow.
If this was a complete port job they may have also opened up the bowls under the valve seats and tear dropped the material behind the valve guide to avoid a dead pocket of air. They would also polish the bowls in that area.
If whom ever did the port job did open the bowls under the valves they may have taken out to much material but if it was a professional job there should be no issues. They may also match the exhaust ports with the header as well and also polish
Regarding the price of the bike... I wouldn't buy a used bike from a dealer. Their Mark up is around 33% and usually more.
Hey K, I'm in RI. I have a few book marked on CL too. Also I check here often and eBay. Willing to drive around 4-6 hours distance with a trailer to pick up the right bike.
