I would like to have your opinion. I have almost always ridden with a full face helmet however I purchased a half shell last year. This year I went to bike week in Myrtle Beach and we rode without helmets and I was able to hear so much more around me including my 9. Today I put on the half shell and took a quick ride to retrieive my full face and omg the wind noise was deafening at only 70mph. The helmet fits but it also felt that it would lift off of my head if I went a faster or turned the wrong way (maybe I am being paranoid on that one). I also couldn't really hear the bike due to that wind noise. As soon as I put on the full face everything was muted but I didn't feel as connected to the bike.
With that said I have some questions.
Do you prefer a full face or half shell?
Do you find a benefit from one over the other?
Am I paranoid thinking that the half shell will lift off?
What do I do about the wind noise?
Being on the north east. I go by weather. Winter is full gear and full face. As it warms up the gear comes off and the full face around 50s and up i run the brain cap. When the weather gets hot i slow down and watch the cagers.
Being winter i tend to drive lots faster being geared up for winter.
I also have a windshield so the brain cap works well. Don't like the brain cap with out the windshield. You feel like you have a kite on your head. Tends to throw your head around and it bothers my neck.
Its all about feeling safe. If you don't ware your gear.
Don't waste your money- I've ridden exclusively with full face helmets from day one. Saved my life on two occasions which reinforced my belief that full face is the only choice. And yet I still found myself wondering how a half shell feels, just around town and slower rides. I bought a very nice Fulmer carbon fiber half shell and have worn it 3 times...
(1) Wind noise is epic. So loud I can't hear my bike which was one of the main reasons for buying it.
(2) Took some kind of flying bug to my left cheek which exploded on impact and left his guts from my eye to my ear.
(3) Had to wipe a couple hundred gnats off my face every 10 minutes or so.
(4) The knowledge swirling around in the back of my brain that "if anything goes wrong I'm screwed" really lessens the enjoyment of the ride.
So now I'm back to wearing the full face all the time, and the half shell collects dust. :-\
I wear ear plugs if I'm not wearing a helmet. The wind hurts my hears. I can still hear just fine. I have to wear them at work so I'm used to it. Sometimes you forget they're in until somebody says you're talking too loud. LOL!
Novelty helmets present motorcycle riders with a higher risk for
skull fracture and brain injury when compared to certified helmets.
A motorcycle rider who wears a novelty helmet during a motorcycle crash in which the rider falls to the ground and the rider's head
contacts a rigid body such as a paved road will likely sustain fatal
head injuries. Motorcycle riders who wear novelty helmets and believe that "something is better than nothing" have a false sense of
security regarding the protection afforded them by helmets not designed or manufactured to comply with FMVSS No. 218.
I have always worn full face. Back in 2005 I rode my FJR to South Dakota. I took a spin with out the helmet. I was very uncomfortable. So I am still with the full face. My wife rides as well she has tipped her bike over couple of times. Even standing still or falling at low speed can cause serious head damage. There are two types of riders. Those who have fallen off and those who have not. I am in the first category. Don't take a chance.
Well its all Full face for me and i just bought this this weekend at our bike show here in Montreal...I also ordered a Bluetooth N-Com B4 for it...Tell me whatya think......
