My 9 starts fine every time I cold start it (its been sitting awhile). But if I ride it for a while then shut it down for a brief period (even a few minutes for anything like gas or just a quick rest stop) I usually have to crank it 2-3 times before it will kick over. A couple of times I had to wonder whether it was going to start at all!? It hasnt left me stranded yet but its a bit embarrasing when it happens......... :redfaced:
Anyone had this issue? What the :edit: could be wrong!?
p.s. FYI, its an 08 with about 800 miles on it and it did this a couple of times when I first got the bike then it went away for awhile.......... until now!!
Hello I too had this problem and can tell you that a new battery will not fix this at least it did not fix mine.
one day it finally left me had to trailer it home. Out of curiosity I pulled the starter and to my surprise it was full of oil and it finally burned through the wires going to the brushes. so I bought a rebuild kit from stockers starters.com and problem solved.
I never post just wanted to pass this on.
New Battery installed - No more problems with restarting
Hello Everyone,
I said that I would repost on this subject, problems with restarting, after I replaced my bikes battery. I purchased a new battery from impact battery dot com. I chose a good one and I did pay a little more for it but I also got a two year warranty with it. Not bad I thought for the extra $20, so I did it. Anyway, two days later I had the battery. Even though the package said the battery would be useable right out of the box I place it on the trickle charger. I charged it fully and then this morning put the new battery into my lovely bike. The new battery made a lot of difference with the bike. My Betty Boop, named so because of the black and red paint, was raring to go. I took her out for a ride and then stop to fill up, just like all of the times before but this time she started right up, no issues at all. I was amazed. I am totally convinced that my restarting problems are over. Just to be sure, when I got home I parked the old girl, waiting about the time to refuel and tried the start again, Varoom, she started again, no hesitation. I did test the other battery that came out of her. The tester I have said that it was only holding a little over 25% of a charge. I knew that couldn't be good! I am one happy rider now. I will be taking her out for a ride tomorrow with weather permitting. Oh, did I mention that I had a recall done on the bike also? There was a factory recall on the bike for a regulator / rectifier having been faulty and possible causing a crash once the bike stalled due to under charging the battery. Well, I thought that was the culprit but it wasn't. I am truly a happy rider though. I hope this bit of information will help all of you.
I'm chiming in here as I have the same problem although my bike has always started after two or three attempts. My bike struggles to start when hot. I have had my battery tested at my local battery shop and it is working fine (100%) nothing wrong and holding all its charge. Now my question is this only because I have seen that nobody has asked or answered it yet.... Could it be that due to heat the compression rings have expanded creating a much tighter seal between piston and sleeve that the cranking of the engine takes a lot more effort and the starter is struggling under the load? When the bike is cold again there is no problems and I was thinking this might be due to the contraction of the compression rings again. I am no mechanic or anything so I cannot profess to be on the right track here but could this be the case?
Thanks
