I was wondering if the 9 has a knock sensor, I was riding my 07, other than de-baffle its all stock, in 5th gear I rolled the throttle and I could hear it pinging, I did it again in 4th, same, 91 octane fuel, 33,400 miles, everything new, plugs, fuel filter, I never heard it do that before, I was just wondering, temp was 91 deg, 3500 ft elevation same fuel I always run in it.
When you replaced the plugs are you certain you put OE plugs back in it? If you accidently changed up and put a hotter plug in 'er this could cause a knock. Also, are you certain that what you hear is actually spark knock? The top ends of these motors are noisy by design so you'll need to have a good ear on you when diagnosing something like this.
Not all locations have 93 octane available and the bike actually calls for a minimum 90/91 octane fuel. However, you are correct in regards to higher octane fuels helping to prevent pre-detonation.
If it just started doing it, it might be a low test tank of fuel. I've had mine do that a couple times just after getting a fresh tank. I guess sometimes they "accidentally" dump the wrong grade of fuel in their storage tanks.
all they have in Vegas is 91, or I could use 100 at another station at 6 bucks a gallon.Plugs are oem and I did it before I replaced the plugs, doesnt do it all the time.
Start with the possibility of it being a bad case of fuel then buddy. You might try a well recognized octane booster if it gets really bad.
