    Default Clutch cable finally!!!!

My clutch cable finally gave out after 36k miles.....had to change it in parking lot while at work.....easy but for putting in bottom part...I've had the extra cable in tank bag for almost a year and a half should I be worried about lubing it?

Just lube it up when you get home. It's been a bag right?

Good on ya pal, for having the foresight to keep the spare on you. I keep a spare, in the bag, under the seat, along with a piece of string for the pull-through. I do not believe you'll need to worry about lubing it right away. Just do it when you get around to it.

Mine has 17,500 miles right now, and I just inspected the ends last week. No sign of fraying. I lube the cable once a year with Dri-Slide.

It's always better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I have my spare running along side my current one and have the end at the handlebars wrapped in black tape. You really wouldn't know it was there unless I told you.

Is it really necesssary to carry a spare cable, will it not give you some inclination that it worn and time to change before it breaks? At 36000 m i would be paying attention to a lot of things that are about to wear out at that point. I would think that it was time to change anyways. Preventive and general maintenance and inspections can get you a long way. Good to have that cable and tools for on the spot change thou. Is this a weak link on the 109 that can happen at low miles with no warning so that I need to be carrying a spare?

I got mine at 15k and rode with it since...it broke on the rear part so no warning other than I could tell it was breaking because it felt spongy no matter how much I adjusted it. While i was adjusting it bang ....it just snapped. I would start carrying one with that many miles..

    Default Clutch Cable

My cable snapped two weeks ago with no warning at all. The weird part was that it happened while crusin at 40 miles an hour on a city road, and it snapped somwhere in the middle, not on either end. Figure that one and at only 15,040 miles. Need to be very careful when adjusting and lubrication make sure you have at least 10- 15mm play in the clutch handel, They are known to snap if there to tight. You did really good carrying the extra, smart move. I always keep one under the seat.
