Default Stopped in admiring--what this piece is--taking out baffles?

I have been riding everyday and wow what a difference. I keep getting stopped and asked about "The Mistress" from other bike riders while they are on their own bike.. funny.. but she is beautiful.

So I saw a guy on a 2012 M109R and he had a chrome piece that attached to the 4 bolts that hold our handlebars on. It had nothing to do with his risers it was just a cover that bolted onto the 4 bolts and man did it look amazing. I would like to know what that is so I can get it.

I have the stock pipes still on my bike and I like the way they look and I really don't want to spend another $800 on pipes. I researched that there are 2 baffles in the stock pipes. I was told to have them removed and it would be louder. Then I was told not to do it because then I would have massive back fire. Has anyone done these things?

    Thanks

As far as debaffling, whoever told you that you would have massive backfire has no idea what they are talking about. I have done it to a few 109's and not one has ever had that. I have never heard of that as well. Do it don't look back, you will love it.

As far as your riser cap, here is one that I know is similar to what you are talking about. Not sure though but here is a link.

as far as the pipes are concered, drill them out, you ll find the instructions here on this site in the "how to" section and as long as you havent modded your intakes you should be fine regarding popping from the exhaust...but, make sure you dont have some overzealous police officers that like to enforce the noise level ordinance or you could be in for some expense. once you mod the stock exhaust, there really inst an easy way to make them quieter again.

I was shocked that Big-B hadn't replied myself. I almost decided to wait and give him a chance as I didn't want to step on his toes. LOL

Go ahead and debaffle, do it in steps so you can stop when it gets loud enough for you. Lots of info in the How-to forum, nice Youtube video too.

    Default Debaffling??? Cover...

So debaffling.. there are 2 in each pipe.. do I have them take a set out of each one.. so there is one set then if its not to loud, I will get the other set out..

The links that everyone sent are for risers.. It seemed more like just a cover... I am calling the bike shop... he said that he couldn't find it.. i dont think that it was a riser...

    Also..
My kurk grips are not on the way I want. I told the bike shop where they installed them. They didn't ask me how I wanted them put on. I didn't want the black rubber part from 12 and 6...... to...... 3 and 9.. basically against my fingers and not in my palms. Since they installed them, what do I do? I want to tell them that I tried it there way and now I want it my way... or ideas?

Do a search on the debaffling, there is more than you will ever want to know. If you are worried about it being too loud I would just drill out the middle of both baffles to start. Not loud enough? Drill some holes in the end plate. Still not loud enough? Completely remove the end plate and the first baffle. That is where I had mine and it was loud but not crazy. No earplugs needed for short rides but got to be a bit much after 2 hours or so.

The links people put up are not risers, they are covers.

Your grips position is decided by the throttle side, no option as far as I could tell when I installed mine. You can change the left side grip but then it won't match the right.

    Default ok

I do not want anything that would be to loud.. espically after a 4 hr ride with the wife on the bike.. so maybe just take out the covers (what you can see from behind the bike)... how would that be?

i did see they are covers.. but dont know if "M9R" is what I would just want it to say....

so what youre saying is the throttle side.. has to be at 12 and 6 (black pieces) and they both are so it matches?

Debaffling does nothing for performance so don't do it unless you want more volume. Watch the Youtube vid on debaffling. All you do is drill out the center of the baffles. So a hole saw on a long extension to stick into the pipe and drill out two walls. Video makes it very easy to understand. Try that first and decide if it is loud enough for you. Going that far isn't too loud but gives a decent rumble. The real volume comes when you remove baffles completely. But your wife most likely won't like that. Mine didn't like it at all, said it was too loud back there and gave her a headache. So just start with what this video shows.

Yes there is a tube inside the throttle grip with a fitting to hook the throttle cables into. The tube is set in place so it decides where the rubber grips will be. The left just slides on so it can be adjusted but then it won't look the same as the throttle grip. So you're just gonna have to live with it unless you want to modify the grips.

The vid you posted is what I did to mine. Completely removed the end plate and the first baffle and drilled the middle out of the second baffle. Definitely a lot more noise that way. It was fine around town, long trips I wanted earplugs as it got to be a bit much over 2 hours or so. Looks better too IMO, I don't like having a huge pipe with a tiny exit hole in the back.

well i guess i want the middle.. I want to be able to listen to my music on 4 hr rides with the wife... so I guess, I want it between stock and totally gone, but sound good... so end plate and 2 baffles in each pipe... what should I do?

Just drill out the center of both baffles in each pipe. Don't mess with the end plate and don't remove any baffles.

Give that a try. If you want it louder you can always do more later.

I'm thinking about doing this too but I don't understand about drilling out the first (center) baflle then you say Not to remove any baffles, I actually like the look of that lil hole being removed at the end but don't really know how I would do that. Just trying to get as much info before I attempt this.

It can be hard to understand before you get in there. I'll try to explain.

Te baffle is a tube with a wall half way in the tube. The end of that tube is the little hole that sticks out the end of the pipe. So you can put a hole saw into the tube and drill out the wall that is halfway into the baffle, for example say 6" into the chrome pipe itself.

Drilling out the wall will give you more sound. There are two baffles so two walls drilled will give more sound than one. Watch the YouTube I linked for wall drilling. You will see him use a drill with a long extension and a hole saw on the end.

Now if you want more sound and I think a better look, you can completely remove the first baffle. To do that you need a larger hole saw that will cut out the entire black plate to where the circular welds are on the black plate. Once that is drilled out it will still be attached to the pipe. You will have to bend the walls out so you can see behind it.

There are three places where the baffle is welded into place inside the pipe. These three welds have to be broken, then you can remove the entire baffle and back plate leaving just the inner baffle. I used a long flat tip screw driver and a small sledge to break the welds.

When I did mine I removed the rear baffle for the cleaner look and drilled out the wall in the second baffle. If I was to do it again I would just remove the rear baffle and not drill the wall in the second. Would be a bit quieter which would be nice for long trips.

Removing that first baffle entirely is what really got the sound going for me. Drilling the two walls didn't do a lot. But if you only want a little, it works.

Hope that helps. Next time I do it ill be taking lots of pics. Easy once you know what is in there.
