    Default Scala or Sena???

Hey all, I am going to finally go get myself a bluetooth set for my helmet. I know there has been quite a bit of talk about it, but I am torn between the new Sena and the new Scala. I have Sideburner exhaust and I'm worried about not being able to hear the music loud enough to make a difference. Has anyone had experience with BOTH units that could tell me which one is louder and/or any pros n cons? Any input would help!

    Thumbs up Sena owner

I have the SENA and the sound quality is awesome. I wear a Full Face Helmet and I have received calls (not often) and the caller did not know I was on my bike. I was riding at about 60 mph and my wife thought I was off the bike talking to her. Battery life is good. I have used it all day with music and GPS and it never failed. I love the big Jog dial and how easy it is to use with gloves. I ride with my son and bike to bike communication is flawless. The only gripe I have is when I have my daughter on the back of my bike I have to toggle between her and my son on his bike. I wish we could create a talk group so that we could all be on the same channel. I have 3 units and I highly recommend the product.
One final note don't expect booming bass from these. I don't think any product like this will replace true headphones. They have to be built to fit in a helmet and the magnet sizes are limited. Expect midrange and highs. The volume is more than adequate.

What is the primary usage for the bluetooth? Do you intend to use it primarily for music and phone integration or is rider communication big on the list?

I love my Sena, and I primarily use it for music/phone purposes. It has a long battery life and intuitive toggle wheel that is easily manipulated with gloves on. The sound is loud! No worries about not hearing the music. Placing the headphones in the correct location can take a bit of tweaking to ensure you are getting the sound to your ear, but that is true of any system.

If you want to have rider communication many people have Scala and it tends to be more common. You cannot pair a Sena with a Scala or vice versa.

I have never used the Scala. I have the Sena smh10 (i think). I can cruise at 80mph on the interstate with scorpion tips and hear the music just fine. This is with a full face helmet. Sorry I haven't used both, so I can't speak for the Scala.

My wife and I have the SENA SMH10 and love it. It also has to do with your helmet brother. Les noise interference with the sound of the speakers. I have an HJC and I hear it loud and clear. Now if you have a better quality helmet, it's much better with either of the two.

Good discussion. I have been using an older Scala system for the last 5 years and have not had too many issues with it. I am looking to upgrade to something with A2DP. The new Scala products have gotten some pretty good reviews. If you haven't looked at webBikeWorld's BT intercom page, check it out HERE. They have very extensive real world testing and reviews for just about everything out there.

    Question

I know absolutely NOTHING about this stuff!
... But, I gotta question about outside noise.
Can you hear the traffic? (enough to avoid them?)

Love my Sena SMH 5. Plenty loud enough even though I wear earplugs. Simple to use. Only two buttons(the jog dial is used as a button also). Affordable too.

Highly recommend either the SMH5 or the SMH10.

    Default Mics

Hey guys, I have a question about the mics. Does anyone use the throat mic? I don't see them as much as I use to. Just wondering.

I am very curious about this, so please post a follow up.

With your RF-1100 do you have all the vents open? There is a /lot/ of wind noise in those helmets, so I would be curious how well the sound works and the microphone.

My Shoei RF-1100 doesn't have a lot of wind noise with all of the vents open.

I gotta say, I have tried several full faced helmets and have never had one that is as quiet as the RF-1100. If you're getting wind noise then I'm wondering if something is wrong... Maybe the visor isn't sealing up right or something? Anyways, it should be here tomorrow, installed tomorrow night, tried out on the way to work Thursday morning and posted shortly thereafter!!!

this is my third RF-1100 and they all have a lot of wind noise

Sealed, not sealed, it doesn't matter. Lots of noise. Not as much as their X series stuff though. More vents = more wind noise.

I have an X-Eleven and it's not noisy. The only thing I notice as far as noise is the mount for my Scala unit, it makes some noise if you don't have the control unit mounted on it. Vents opened or closed it's pretty quiet. When I first got it the shield wasn't sealing very well, but after adjusting it, it got a lot quieter.

Good choice on the Sena. It'll work just fine in any full face helmet regardless of how relatively quiet it is. I recently completed a 6 day trip and we had 4 Sena SMH 10's. I was the only one with a full face helmet, the other 3 had open face style helmets. I had no problem communicating with them even at speeds above 60 mph. Sure, there was wind noise when these guys spoke at higher speeds but I could hear them just fine. The Senas worked well and it really added to the fun being able to talk to each other.

I just picked up an Sena SMH-10. Got it in the mail yesterday. Installed and works perfect for music. I have yet to make a successfull call with it (only tried at home and the phone was dropping bluetooth on calls), but I can have my phone read me text messages and reply to them. I have a modular helmet that's a little loud at times, so I don't know how well calls will work anyways. The main thing I wanted was the music. The rest will be icing on the cake.

I was going to buy a chatterbox, because I have an HJC helmet that is set up for it, but after reading all the bad reviews (here and everywhere else on the net) I decided to steer clear of them.
