Default Who checks their drain plug magnets?

Well, I reached a truce with the ex, and made my payment, so bike is still mine. Now that we've set precedent, I don't think I'll have any more issues, or.....you might see me on Judge Judy.

Anyhow, to celebrate the agreement, I changed my oil (on time) today.

Course, my attitude with her lately, I have to admit I have been riding the bike harder than I have in the past couple seasons. Combined with the hot temps, you have a recipe for more wear. In checking the magnets I could definitely tell. No excessive wear mind you, but I could see more metallics on those in a normal interval, where I'm not ragging the bike often. I'd say 75-100% more metallics. Keep in mind I'm not saying they magnets were covered, loaded up, etc. It's just a relative observation.

I ALWAYS have some level of metallics during a change, so I am not panicking or feeling like my engine sustained above average wear. I also believe those with near clean magnets ride like grannies, or are lucky, or don't exist.

Do your magnets give any indication how naughty you've been?

IOW, your magnets are not completely clean! (just saying, no gray = clean)

A little bit of wear is expected. I would expect less and less and the miles roll on. I'm only around 16K now. I'm just waiting for a prideful one to insist that their plugs are spotless (not possible IMO). It's ok to admit your bike is not frictionless.

"She's real fine", you got high mile bikes, I bet yours are the cleanest.

I always get a very tiny bit on them as that is natural. I wipe down, pick out the crap with a small screw driver and then throw them back in.

I assume you mean break in change on the rear diff? Or have you changed it at regular intervals?

Thats a good point - I did it at 1500 miles for peace of mind but the dealer is meant to do it at the first 600 mile service - maybe they didnt...

Didn't you just post up about getting kicked out of gear? I noticed more metal right before my 2nd gear failed!

If it was the first change that is normal. It shouldn't have a whole lot from now on.

I would imagine, if you have 16,000 or so miles on it, the engine would be completely broke in. After going through the ordeal that I have just recently gone through earlier in the year personally rebuilding the tranny/engine, if you have metal on your magnets it probably is shavings from the second gear dogs and the shift fork.

Yeah, they did look more like shavings this time. From where we don't know........

Ever wonder how much misses the magnet but gets collected in the filter? Not to mention non ferrous material such as aluminum, copper or clutch resins, asbestos, or ceramic. Who has sawed their oil filter open and looked at the inside? I have and it ain't pretty. I got a different oil at a quick lube and it must have had a lot of detergent in it. My truck, not the bike. Anyway, it stopped up the filter and oil pressure went to zero on the way home. Saved it due to idiot light on dash AND oil pressure guage.

I've thought that as well. How much is a little magnet going to pick up, anyway? Floating stuff while it cools overnight and settles? Gearbox dregs? Who knows. I have met guys that swear by the filter magnet wraps.

Check and clean those out, each and every time! And very light dust is all I find, and it's very minimal. And I run Valvoline Dino now, from Auto-zone. Prior, A case of Yamaha Lube. Yet for the longest time Suzuki Dino, yet I have used Suzuki's Syn. oil for7 to 8 changes. Current Miles on my 9, is 42,000 something. And I also change my oil at 1800 miles tops.

Do you recall how long it took between the time you saw that and your tranny took a crap?

I'm not worried as I haven't had any issues since, however, it would be nice to keep an eye on the miles just in case.

It was the last oil change I did so I would say mid summer maybe June sometimes and then just got worse as it would jump out of gear on a regular by October when I took it in for repair, I ended my season early in hopes I would have it back Before the first snow so that I could give it a good test ride but that didn't happen until the following season when I was so pleasantly surprised by how much different the bike now is! It is a completely different bike and litterly shifts like a hot knife through butter and has performed better then I could have expected going by how bad the shifting was before the rebuild. Now I do got to say I could have babied the bike another season if I had to, I don't want to give the impression that my trans fraged and was not working at all but I could make it jump out at will.

I doubt it works all that great but I found a circular magnet which is attatched now to my oil filter. I figured it couldn't hurt since it was either gonna live on the bike or go in the trash. My drain plug normally has a little grey on it and it's been over 37k miles.

Yeah, I think I mentioned one of those early in the thread. Those things work!

Thanks for the info. Anything is helpful. No jumping out of gear (yet). I hope my quick reaction the other night and not applying power saved me more major damage. Any missed shift is never good!
