Default Rode up to the U.P. don't cha know, Eh?

Never been to Michigan before and they hate Ohio State as much as I do, so I need to check this place out.
My plan was to ride up and camp in Michigan for a long weekend of searching for good roads. I was planning on making the trip by myself but had a couple buddies (STLTiger and his brother Luke) contact me two days before my departure and said they wanted in on the action. Hmmm, fours days of solitude on my bike and the woods, or drinking beers with my buddies at the end of a long day.......................easy decision, especially considering that bears have been spotted around a couple of the areas that I plan on visiting. I don't have to outrun the bear, I just can't be the slowest. ;D
Ben asked me to come up and stay with them the night before we took off so I could start off as rested as they would. But first I had to finish up my honey do's before taking off for St Louis, which included mowing the yard in 105 degree heat. I kissed the kids and my wife good bye and took off for the city that is known for it's Provel cheese and also the defending World Series Champs. My bike was loaded to the hilt, I wanted to have cold beverages whenever I stopped, so I took a full size 36 litre cooler to haul some local St Louis brews and plenty of water. The tent is behind the cooler and my air mattress is in the blue bag underneath the cooler. Needless to say I wasn't exactly roughing it.

Friday morning at the crack of 7 am we are standing around the bikes as the last few items are loaded into bags or strapped on.

Ben rides the 109 and Luke has a 2011 C14.
We hit the road and unfortunately have to burn a ton of interstate to get to our first night's camping spot just north of Muskegon. Slabbin' it on the interstate gives us plenty of time to work on our charade techniques as we point and laugh at all of the idiotic people that should probably never get behind the wheel of a car much less pilot said car at 70 mph down a crowded four lane. Other than self absorbed cagers, Illinois doesn't provide any memorable events until we got east of Chicago and stopped in Tinley Park for some Al's Beef. (I forgot to take food pics dahmik) Very greasy since they dip the whole sandwich into Au Jus before rolling into the paper, but it was oh so good. We ended up getting to our campsite around 5 pm and set up for the evening so we could commence with the important stuff like supper and beer drinking. We went into a little town just east of our campground and had a great supper at a place in Fremont called the Moon Star cafe. Once we finish up eating we all decide that a trip to WalMart is needed to get ice, beer, and a chair for Ben. We come outside and Ben can't get his helmet lock to release his helmet. After fiddling with it for about 20 minutes he decides that he is just gonna hack saw it off. FYI: Kewl Metal helmet locks are garbage.

Campsite where beer and cigars were consumed and many lies were told.

Saturday morning we were the first campers up and around (sorry for the loud [ish] bikes, campers). Our goal was to find some good roads en route to our destination for the night. We found them, but the traffic was pretty bad even in the more rural areas up around Arcadia and Franfort. There were a couple spots on M-22 where we had a great time and really enjoyed the smooth sweepers. Once we got north of Holland there was always nice scenery to enjoy (to bad I don't have the photo skills to accurately convey what I saw).
Arcadia had a beautiful spot to overlook Lake Michigan and snap a couple pics.

Luke is in the high viz jacket, Ben is in the middle and I am the dork in the "storm trooper" Alpinestars.
After meeting up with everyone for the northern Michigan ride in Traverse City (pronounced Trah-vers, not Tra-verse as I was corrected by the girl in the McDonalds) we spent some time on the interstate but also managed to find a couple good roads to break up the monotany of the slab. We ended up on a road called Tunnel of Trees, and I call it deathtrap alley for good reason. There is sand and rock in EVERY single corner. Other that that it was a very nice, scenic road that led us straight into Leg's, a Polish joint that had so much varish on it's wooden decorations that they have to own stock in Minwax. We stepped out onto the back deck and I was blown away by the view. If you have ever seen the movie Step Brother's you will know what I mean when I say it was like the "*Friggin'* Catalina Wine Mixer."
Thanks again for the great meal and after dinner entertainment Russell!

We got into Mackinaw and stayed within spitting distance of the Mackinaw bridge (gateway to the U.P.). We had a nice campfire on the beach and once again drank beer, smoked cigars and swapped many lies.
Sunday morning we get up and start our trek into the wilderness that is the U.P. But first we have to eat breakfast and pay $4 to cross the Mackinaw bridge. Breakfast was at a cafe in the downtown area and the Pastie (pronounced pass-tee, not pays-tee). It tasted alot like a frozen pot pie and was later told that a good Pastie is much much better, I guess I will have to wait for the next trip.
Looking down through the grated areason the Mackinaw bridge isn't adviseable, but that is why I just had to do it. Once into the U.P. we hit the road and started north towards Taquamenon State Park. The falls were nice but highway 123 west of Paradise was a pretty good road for steaming through some fun sweepers. The highlight of my trip had to be H58 that we hopped on just north of Newberry and took it all the way until it met up with 28. This road had to have been designed by a motorcyclist or at least someone with a love of good curves. It was nothing but fast sweepers and perfectly manicured landscape. The vegetation was cut back far enough to give great visibility through the corners and inspired a level of confidence I have rarely felt on an unfamilar road. If it wasn't for the group of Harley riders going 20 under the limit I would have probably never even used my brakes for the whole road. I think they call it Hurricane 58.................whatever, it is a great road!
After 300 miles of riding we were ready to set up camp and do the normal supper, beer, cigar, story fabrication thing (see a trend forming here?). We pull into the campground/hoarders paradise, that is known as Gitche Gumme just east of Marquette and I commence to nearly dump my loaded down bike in the sand that is all over the main entrance area. Great, hopefully the whole place isn't like this. Sure enough it is. We pull up to what looks like the main office and I walk up to check it out. After peeking my head in and seeing that it was a billiard/rec room/hoarder storage I came back out to the bikes in time to see an older guy walking towards us with what appeard to be a t-shirt and that was it. NO PANTS! He waved and said "hold on I'm coming". Oh crap this crazy guy runs the joint. He commences to tell us that he built the place up from nothing and I am just thinking that he parked a bunch of old cars here and cut down a couple trees to build a cabin or two. He offers us some water from his "Artesian well" and said that it keeps him young. When we tell him that we were gonna go into town for supper he tears his desk apart looking for a phone number to a pizza place and tells us to save our gas and just have them deliver. Should I take dining advice from a senior citizen with no pants? No way, this guy is nuttier than squirrel turds! Into Marquette we go.
We had been hearing that the smoked fish is excellent up the U.P, and we had to get some before heading home. Well every stinkin' store that we stopped at was out! I was beginning to think that smoked fish was an elusive creature kinda like sasquatch or the Chupacabra. Or maybe it was just the fact that it was Sunday and they were sold out........ either way I was bummed since I really wanted a snack (fat guys gotta eat right?). Well our wishes were answered when we finally got into Marquette for supper we asked our lovely waitress at Aubry's (awesome pizza and wings) where to find smoked fish. She told us "hold on a second another waitress grew up here and can answer that better than I can." The other waitress came out and let us know that on Sunday's it is hard to find it unless we go to a certain grocery store. Econo foods here we come. With full bellies of pizza and wings we commence to picking out our evening snack. I picked the salmon and the brothers got trout. The salmon was a little salty for me but it was very good non-the-less. The trout was excellent with a less salty flavor and will be my pick the next time I am in the area.
Back at the campground I run into Mr no pants, and surprisingly he had all his clothes on this time. I said "Well, you do have pants!" And he went into a 5 minute speech about how being naked helps beat the heat (not exactly what got me through Iraq). I was just grabbing the wood that we bought and heading back to the campsite. I loaded up the wheel barrow and headed back to our site.

We broke camp around 7 am the next morning and started the long trip home. Besides a bee in my helmet and couple of suicidal deer we had a pretty uneventful trip south through Michigan. We got into Wisconsin around 10 am and it was like somebody turned the thermostate way up. It had been low 80's all weekend in Michigan and it was 95 by 10 in the Cheesehead state. After several hours of suffering through construction zones we found some open road and cracked the throttles headed south. Everything was great until we got about halfway through Illinois. Ben's bike had developed a problem with either the fuel filter or something else that was neutering his bike. He could do 65 but that was about it. Other than that the interstate was fairly boring and I ended up getting home and being welcomed by my kids.
All in all it was a great trip and I look forward to my next one. I will have a central hub that way I can leave my gear at the campsite and go tear up the local roads. It has been over a month since I made a trip to Arkansas..................

It was great to meet everyone and as always it was a pleasure to see Grandpa Tractor and his alien space craft than somehow gets through the corners and is a hoot to watch as he showers sparks everywhere. I really look forward to my next 109 get-together.

You can run, but you will just die tired..............

It was great to see you again Jeremy. Next time you may have to head up along the Mississippi and ride some good SW WI road on the way to the UP.
Thanks for the great write up and Pics.

Great write up Jeremy. You would have loved the next day also. It was great to meet you and the brothers. I wonder if Ben has the dreaded dirty fuel filter, I had that issue with my 9.

Great to see some old friends again too, even if in pictures. Glad you guys had a good time.

    Default Friggin Catalina Wine Mixer

I had a blast (until the last 200 miles)! Nothing better than spending four days camping and on the road with friends and my two brothers (one from a different set of parents)! Jeremy thanks for the great write up and keeping the drinks cold for us on the trip. Even with everything that seemed to wrong for me this weekend I made it home safe and now I'm making plans to drop it off at Dr. Matt's for some TLC.

Here is my addition to the trip:

We left the camp site in Marquette, MI and were making great time heading through Michigan, Wisconsin and North Illinois. Luke and I were projected to be home in St. Louis before 6:00 PM and Jeremy to Fort Leonard Wood before 8:00 PM. The Gas light came on around El Paso, IL just north of Bloomington, IL and then I started losing power when I would twist the throttle but I could maintain 65 - 70MPH (200 miles from home). We stopped in El Paso and I filled up my tank and took it for a little ride up and down the road and the problem went away. So we road on down to Bloomington, IL for lunch at Fudruckers. I topped off my tank before we left so the Connie 14's wouldn't have to stop as soon. We hit the road again and all was good for about 30 miles and then I lost power again. I was able to maintain 70 mph until we got to Springfield, IL. At this time Luke and I told Jeremy to go ahead and get home we would be fine. I would just have to take it nice and slow. Jeremy took off and headed for home since he had a wife and kids waiting on him not to mention he had an extra 130 miles past St. Louis.

I filled up again on the north side of Springfield and the problem went away again. Luke and I decided to let the Bike sit for a while and it was so hot so we went into McDonalds for some ice-cream and water. We headed for home and three miles into this leg of the trip I hit something in the road and it kicked it up into my back tire. I would guess a piece of steel debris. I was praying nothing went wrong but then all of a sudden I felt it very hard to steer and the bike was not responding to me leaning or pushing and pulling on the handle bars. I got it over to the side of the road as soon as it felt the problem. My back tire was leaking air at a massive rate.

We got off the bike and looked it over for the problem in the tire. Well we didn't find the object but we found the holes it left behind. Luke and I carry a Co2 air kit and patch plugs. I knew this wasn't going to be pretty when the rasping tool went right in the tire with little or no resistance. I put a plug in the upper hole and one in the lower hole used the two Co2 cartridges to air my 250 up to about 30psi. We headed back to Springfield, IL and went straight to the Wal-Mart tire lube express. The guys there were very helpful by allowing us to use the shop air to air up the tire and check for leaks. The rope plugs were not doing the job so Luke and I pulled the plugs out of the tire and went inside to buy a new plug kit (one with the rubber cement). I drenched the first plug with the rubber cement and stuck it back in the top hole. The lower hole was the issue. The hole was less than an inch away and twice as big. I hit the hole with rubber cement and then put it on the plug and stuck it in the hole. Luke then held on the lower plug with a pair of pliers and I forced another rope plug into the same lower hole. We filled the tire back up to 44 psi and let it sit for 15 - 20 to let everything set up and dry. I cut away the excess and rode around the parking lot a few times. We sprayed it with the soapy water and no leaks!

So now I'm about ready to give up on being a motorcycle rider at this point and go back to being a bad golfer and a hungry fisherman!

I thinking to myself what else could go wrong today? I am really surprised my clutch cable didn't break on the way home to send me over the edge.

We hit the interstate after losing a ton of time dealing with the fuel and rear tire problems. Luke rode behind me to monitor and check on the rear tire. So now I'm going 65 MPH on a very unsafe tire repair and I have 110 miles before I'm home. We stopped about 50 miles down the road to check on the tire and top off my tank again to keep the fuel problem at bay. It was holding air and had not dropped any pressure at all! We continued on down I-55 and it was getting dark. In the distance I can see the city lights of St. Louis. I have never appreciated seeing the St. Louis Arch that much in my entire life as we were crossing the bridge in to St. Louis.

Jeremy beat us home to the middle of Missouri before we rolled into the driveway of the house at 9:45 PM. That was the worst 200 miles of my life!!!! Really got me thinking about getting a Kawasaki Concours 14 as well!

Oh yeah my GPS shot craps on day three and Kewl-Metal helmet lock can Kiss my ASS!

Ben, Sorry about all the troubles. I'm still glad you came. You three were a riot and fun to watch going down the road. I've ridden hat stretch between Whitefish Point before but never like we did that day. I was laughing the entire way. We covered 10 miles in about 9.5 minutes.

Oh, it was quicker than that. The locals reported a loud, low flying UFO as lond as a semi trailer, with a flash of green and orange in it!!!

I'm sure there were a few calls made to the sheriff. I don't think they're used to that kind of riding since the UP is pretty much Harley country. :)

Default My take on what happened over these 5 days.

    Day 1
For me it started off Saturday morning. I met with grandpatractor in my small village of Alanson. We talked for a bit then decided which route to take to get to Hooters to meet the rest of the group. Out first stop was at the Cross in the Woods church, home of the worlds largest crucifix. While we were there I dropped a dollar in the box by Our Lady of the Highway statue. I was hoping she would watch over the group.

Everyone made it home safely so it must have worked. After leaving there we rode over to the Tunnel of Trees to take a run through. We rode through Harbor Springs and down through the summer home area. They shut this whole area off in the winter. After going through there we pretty much rode straight down to Traverse City but not without stopping so JD could have a piece of the worlds biggest cherry pie.

It just started sprinkling so we decided to wait it out inside. Ben, Luke, Jeremy, Jason, Barb and Scott met us at Hooters for a quick lunch before hitting some of my favorite roads on the way back to the tunnel.

On our way we battled the summer traffic but we were able to hit some decent sweepers. I believe there was a little peg down action. I'm not talking about JD cuz he gets his pegs down on a straight away. We stopped off in Charlevoix because I wondered if anyone would want to got o some of the shops or go to the car show but we were all on the same page, we wanted to ride. We rode some more of those roads I enjoy so often and eventually we were back in Harbor Springs. That's where the tunnel of trees begins. I waved the group on by because I didn't want to hold them up any longer and away they went. I rode with them long enough to see JD launch that C9 in the air, after that I decided I would stay back. It's like watching a rhino skip, it just isn't supposed to happen. There will be a short video of the tunnel shenanigans coming soon. At the end of the tunnel lies the Legs Inn, authentic polish cooking. Jeremy already wrote about that so I don't really have anything to add. The cool thing about the Legs Inn is this guy showed up and bought us all dinner.
    oops I mean this guy.

It was a good time at the inn but we had to part ways with Russel, he had a certain meeting to give a

lesson. We headed up to our hotel in Mackinac for the night. It was a straight ride there and I can't add anything to what Jeremy has already written. There were some good conversations flying around though. Around 1:30 we put the fire out and called it a night.

    Day 2
We all decide to meet up and go to breakfast at the Pancake Chef in Mackinac City. As soon as I pull out of the parking lot of the hotel my tire pressure sensor light turns bright red. My rear tire is at 27psi. We get to the restaurant and I find the culprit, a tiny nail. This is the 3rd one in 3 weeks. I have to find out where these are coming from. Anyhow I'm thinking my trip is coming to an end right now but someone whips out a plug kit, I think it was Ben. I've never plugged one before but the guys talk me through it and that problem is put behind us. I worried about that plug the rest of the trip but never had an issue with it. Thank you Lady of the Highway. A quick breakfast and we're on our way to cross the bridge.

Oh I forgot to mention my friend Domo tried to steel Ben's bike at about 5:30 in the morning but I stopped him.

After crossing the bridge we went straight up to Whitefish Point, home to one of the many ship wreck museums.

We chilled here a while and just looked at the scenery. The lake was calm and the BS was flying. After walking around a bit we decided to head for Tahquamenon Falls. No one was really in the mood to walk, it was a warm day. At the falls there were a few pics taken, some home made root beer made it's way down the hatch, I believe some of the boys also had a brewski, of course the guy that rode the Victory had some ice cream. I thought that was a Goldwing thing. From Tq Falls we pretty much shot straight over to Marquette so people could check into their campsites/hotel rooms. Let me tell you this, Jeremy was right about underwear guy. That guy was an odd ball. If I would have went there with my kids I would have been pissed. As he was telling them about the pizza delivery someone yells down from upstairs,"I just ordered a pizza." I thought he was inviting them to dinner. Maybe it's just me but I would have walked away from that place. As they were checking in another guy pulls up in a camper and asks them where the party is. This guy was creepy too. At this point I'm thinking Deliverance or UP chainsaw massacre. I'm super tired now so I headed on to my campground. I like to stay at state parks so I went to Van Riper which was about 30 miles away.

I had a quiet night sleep until the train whistle went off at 1am and scared the living chit out of me. They could have warned me about this. It took the train about 10 minutes to go by and I could hear the whistle for longer than that.

Awww, you guys are rich with adventure and thanks for sharing your stories.
It's always a good read to hear of the misfortunes and fun on the road.

I've learned a good lesson from all of this, "always look down before going out into public".
It's the mis-adventures we remember the most.

Keep up the good work guys.

    I'm bagged.......

    ride safe.
I will make sure to let you know if I come through Chicago, you make sure and let me know if you are down around the Ozarks. Maybe you could recommend another awesome sandwich since I marked Al's Beef off the list.

You can run, but you will just die tired..............

    Day 3
This morning I wake up and feed my Domo the breakfast of champions.

I was up at 6am a few hours prior to our meeting time so I decided to go looking for some moose. This is supposed to be moose country. I didn't see any moose but I did see a coyote. After exploring for a bit I headed back to the meeting place. We meet up and head for the harbor. I was hoping to find a tire repair kit just in case I have further issues. We stopped in Houghton by the lake to view the bridge.

There was a dealership here so we walked over but no kit. We eventually found one at a Holiday station. They had a nice little selection so I snagged a slime repair kit. JD found a nice pump and Rich also found a kit he liked. Now I think we're ready for anything. From here we head up the highway. It is nice riding up here, it's probably 10 degrees cooler than back at home. When we get to the scenic road I turned on the camera to record some video. I'll post that up later. I haven't even viewed that yet. Our next stop was Copper Harbor, the restaurant that Rich wanted to take us to didn't open for an hour so we found another nice little place. I don't know about anyone else's lunch but I really enjoyed mine. I went the Cajun route.

Now that we're fed we're going to the top of Brockway Mountain. It's a busted up chitty road but the view is amazing.

    Aren't they cute?

Some more great riding follows then we ended up here.

After leaving the Gay Bar we headed towards the Porcupine Mountains. Here's some road pics.

We arrived at the Porcupine Mountains and the group checks into the motel. I went on to set up my campsite. I was staying in the PP Mountain State Park. I set up real quick and went back to the hotel for dinner, MMMM nachos. Thanks for the beer Rich. A quick dinner then we decided to go look at the Lake in the Clouds.

    The ghost of Crazy Katie.

    Awwww

From here we watch the light show put on by JD and head back to the motel for a swim. After relaxing in the pool I realize if I don't get to my campsite I might not leave at all. I depart at this time but I think the party is just beginning. For me it's nighty night time. See ya in the morning.

    Day 4
This morning I got up in time to see the sunrise over Lake Superior.

I feed my Domo breakfast, if I don't feed him he gets cranky.

On the way down to the hotel I stop to take a few more pics. Domo is the KING OF THE ROAD!

I get to the hotel in time to have coffee with everyone. Here's the view from the hotel.
Kirk's Victory with the surf board floor boards.

We leave the hotel and head on through the park planning to stop at the swinging bridge and the waterfalls. The road starts off kind of broken but that doesn't last long.

I took one of those stupid self portraits, I was tempted to do a duck face but I couldn't make myself do it.

    WARNING!!!!

Next stop Ironwood to see the worlds biggest Indian.

Worlds biggest Indian with the worlds baldest pecker?

From here on Rich, JD and Kirk were just heading home and I was going to ride up to Two Harbors. Not much else to tell other than a b sting for Kirk, a dicky red truck driver, Shell is entertaining to watch when she thinks she lost her wallet, she needs to pee 10 minutes after we leave the gas station, JD almost became part of a jeep that was turning then slammed on her brakes and I rode up to Two Harbors to take about 6 pictures, eat 2 granola bars and fill up my tank.

    WARNING!!!!

One more thing about Duluth, I almost got blown off that damned bridge on the way back to Michigan.
A couple pics for JD. I'd say this is probably the world biggest chain saw and the worlds biggest shot gun.

I wonder if that chain saw will fit in your saddle bags.

I don't know, you'd have to ask the head honcho of the Pink Knights.

    Day 5
Nothing to tell here other than I rode 210 miles in the down pouring rain to get home to a 3 smiling faces and a tail wagging dog. Lake Superior was throwing the wind, lightning and rain at me but I still made it. When I reached the Mackinac Bridge it was still raining but eerily calm, no wind and Lake Michigan was like glass. Total miles 1,705.4 according to my GPS. Now what are you all doing next week?
