    Default Bike Safety Course

http://www.bikesafenc.com/ I don't know if this will work, but I came across a link on the GL1800 site. I wondered if anyone here has taken this course? Seems like it might be interesting, and best of all, it is free. Do you guys want to try to get a group together and do this sometimes?
I think I might give it a try and see if I can freshen up on my motoring skills.

Hoping you'll get some input on this thread. Hendersonville isn't too awfully far away from me and I'd like to take a safetly course like this.

I took a motorcycle training class that was very good and I would recommend everyone refresh their skills.

This is a great find. I am in Fort Eustis, Va and I am planning on getting a bunch of my fellow military riders together and reserve a number of slots and do a group ride down there. Thank you so much for sharing. The military is making us take Experienced rider courses every 12 months or we will be restricted from riding. We have found some classes but they run around 500$, and we would not get reimbursed. Finding this, for free and from real Police officers is like a dream come true for us military riders. Again thank you so much.

I've emailed them to make sure there isn't a problem with an 'out of state' rider taking the class. If not, I've already hit the wife up for a 'weekend getaway' for us on March 10th down to Hendersonville, NC. I've been wanting to take a course like this for years and as Keith said, it's free! I just hope I don't do something stupid like lay my 9 down while trying to get around the cones etc.

Why is it an out of pocket expense for the Soldier? I have the Reg/ALARIC at work that states that the required training will be required but at NO EXPENSE TO THE SOLDIER.

Here in Fort Eustis, VA they used to have a contract with the MSF guys who would give the basic and Experienced Rider course for free. But since all the budget cuts they did not renew the contract and now the Army is requiring that 12 months after you have gotten your motorcycle endorsement, you will attend an Experienced rider course or you will not ride on-or-off post anymore. My command is telling us that if you want to ride you have to meet the standard and get the course wherever you can. Community College, riders classes on your own and maybe get reimbursed at a later date with the G.I Bill, maybe. So when I heard about this class here for free, I am getting a group of us together to go and reserve a class and attend. We shall see what God has in store about all this. Some of us have stopped riding because of the Army demand and the high cost of attending one of these classes.

It would be nice if we could pick a date, and let the nines take over the whole training day.

Thats another BS excuse for the command to make the requirement, yet not fund the required training. Thats just a plain cop out. You might want to check around the AF bases in your area. Here (Luke AFB) Actually has a group of MSF instructors that do the same thing for their base. They told up that we coulding do the MSF beginner course, due to the fact that their classes are already full with their AF folks. But, that we were more than welcome to come fill up their Experienced Riders course. They were running 10 per class and always had openings every quarter. Thats our plan as of right now. Could be another option for you closer?

Oh absolutely, the NAVY has some courses that are real close, but this way we get a day off from work, friday, and we get a NICE ride in,. They want to stick it to us so we will take advantage of it. Plus because it is given by Police officers, we can make it even more legit. And we are in the process of contacting the ARMY safety high ups and saying, why don't cars have to take all these extra classes.

There are no cone courses with this training. Just classroom and on the road observation/feedback.

I think the funding it just the last straw with the leadership not wanting anyone to ride at all. Alot of it has to do with the stats that the odds are worse when riding. Right now DOD states that the first 12 months after returning from a deployment, the servicemember has a higher chance of death from a motorcycle accident than while the year in combat. Alot of it is due to the young troop on a new crotch rocket, along with a pocket full of money when they return home from the deployment. I believe the leadership also feels like if they restrict all motorcycle riding on post then they can atleast cut down on some of the accidents. What sucks is some of the younger and financially strapped troops use a motorcycle a cheaper means to get to work to help defray the cost of rising gas prices. I know there were 6-10 Soldiers where I'm at that the only time they ride (90%) of the time is just back and forth to work. It sucks for them, but then again they have never seen the bike more than that, just a commuter. Alot don't ever try and get better at riding. Those are the ones that seem to get into accidents here. We have lost more Soldier's this year in motocycle accidents than any other year in history. Until the command starts actually taking a forward approach to riding and training instead of putting a restriction and a blind eye, I feel it wont get any better. It would be so much easier to make Soldiers attend required training and group rides. And make it during the duty day, the participation would be much greater and Sodlier could receive decent education and a refesher to boot.

If you go to the class requirements and look at the pictures, pic 3 of 13 is a "9".

I received an email back and the classes are open to anyone, whether you live in NC or not. Looks like I'm going to sign up and go, as long as the weather cooperates and I can get the 9 off of the mountain and over the other mountains.

I think I will have to wait for one of the courses in Durham. I didn't realize that Hendersonville was over 4 hours away.

    Talking Attended May 2009

Took the course May 2009 in Raleigh. It was fun! You watch MC safety films and discuss afterwards. Then you and a partner alternate riding through city streets while an officer (volunteer) rides and observes your riding style for about 45 minutes. You have lunch, then return to the classroom for instruction/tips on riding safer. You head out a second time while using the tips you learned in class. The second ride is longer and the officer still observes you and your partner. At the end of the ride, the officer critiques both of you and you receive your certificate. There is only one problem, the riders who take the course are normally the ones who ride safe all the time. As the officer observing me stated, "we need the young & sport bike riders here to really take the course." He further stated, "my partner and I were disgusting, 'cause he couldn't find fault in either of our riding styles." To sum it up, take the class, 'cause you can always learn something from it. I expected the "cone course" also prior to attending and street riding with an experienced motorcycle policeman who does it on a daily basis turned out to be way better! An added note: You also have the opportunity to talk with the officers between classes and pick their brains.

Well, I signed up for the March 10th class in Durham. This should be interesting. You know I will have to ask him if he remembers another red M109 that took the class 3 years earlier.

Go to the link. It should let you see all the dates, and locations. Better be quick, they are filling the slots kind of fast. I wanted to go to Hendersonville, but that was a little too far for me.

Well, it was a cold start today (38 degrees when I left home), but the training course was well worth it. The instructors were great. Had a couple of no-shows, but it worked to our advantage. Each student had an instructor for the ride. Had 2 wings, 2 nines, 1 BMW, and 1 Duc.. I would strongly suggest this for anyone. Much better than the instruction that you get from your local community college, or the riders edge program that Harley does. You actually get 2 sessions on the road. A short one, which is about 25-30 miles, and a longer one that is in the country (about 50 or so miles.) On the long session, I had a little of an advantage, since it was in an area north of Durham that I ride anyway. Got a chance to ride by some of my old stomping grounds. Overall, a great day.
Now I will try to ride to church tomorrow. The temps in the morning wil be in the upper 20's and lower 30's, but should get to the mid to upper 60's after lunch.

Sounds like a good day. Did you learn anything new in the class? I was supposed to go to Hendersonville but my son ended up having an All-Star Basketball game today.

Thanks you as well. We definately need to get together and do some more riding.
Service was nice today. I set a new personal record, it was 30 degrees when I left home. A lot nicer for the ride back.
As far as the class, it taught me a lot about being more aware of surroundings, and some great things about setting up for curves and such. I will be practicing some of that for the pre mid atlantic meet.
