So Here is my custom exhaust job, let me know what you think!

Ok, guys, after talking with several people on the forum, and looking at other projects, weighting the pro's and cons, I finally stepped out in faith and with very little technical know how, made my own custom exhaust.

Hindsight is always 20/20 so if I could have gone back, I would have done this slightly different, but it was relatively painless.

Now for the good part, If you like the looks of these pipes, you will love the sound. The way they are shaped they act as an echo chamber. Believe me it sounds like a big beast rolling down the road like thunder waiting to devour any HD it sees.

Today I rode up on a bunch of Harley Riders that were obviously having a shin dig of sorts in town. I don't think they thought much of me, until I cracked the throttle on this bad boy through a couple of stop lights. Ah yes, I got the reaction I desired, dropped jaws and turning heads....It's nice being a member of the 109 club.

The cool thing about this exhaust is it has a HUGE sound, almost like its attached to a v-8. I was blown away at how much sound there was but not only that but the quality of the tone. When you crack the throttle it goes from loping to top fuel dragster. In addition, the response on the throttle and the physically noticeable gain on performance is amazing as well.

With just modding the throttle you had better be hanging on if your gonna wind out the RPM's, personally it is a difference of night and day to stock. All of that and even no PC III. Although I think I will eventually go with the PC III just for bragging rights and effeciency.

One other thing, this mod is plenty loud, but at low RPM,s the tone and volume is very manageable so your not going to have to worry about the long arm of the law or annoying neighbours bitching.

On the other hand crack the throttle and this beast comes screaming at the top of it's lungs. I am a Bad MOFO and your Better get out of my way.

I was reading how some guys were posting how that HD ad's were using the bad boy personna of their bikes as a marketing tactic. Obviously none of these guys have ever rode a 109 with loud exhaust. Truth was, with my exhaust, I was easily drowning those guys out on their HD's on rev but smooth and loping sound on the down side.

Personally, I love the sound, much much more than any drag pipe, after all unique was what I was going for. I am posting a video and will post the link with the picture as well.

Of course the video as all the other I have seen do it no justice whatsoever, you just can't catch that sound of "big Balls" on digital.

Oh....Theres...just one more thing....I have been looking at turned down tips that are slashed to maybe put ont he ends. I found some cool ideas that are designed for diesel trucks that would slip over and I think would look cool as hell. But then again I am digging the look of them now, just another idea I am throwing around!

Yeah I know what you man, I am looking at some different ideas, but that short stocky pipe is growing on me....so, may keep it a while and when I get the itch for change add some tips! Thanks for the input though!

Thanks bro, I really dig em. I found some cool slash turn downs that would look nice on there as a slip on addition. I am thinking though, I wonder what the scorpion raw tips would look like on there, or if they would even fit over the end of the exhaust? I have no idea how they are made so I don't really know, just a thought!

I also wanted to add that i don't have a lot of popping on deceleration and gearing down, nor do I get backfiring. That's not to say that I don't get an occasional pop here and there, but it doesn't sound like a string of firecrackers going off when I come to a stop or rack off the throttle.

Just for the sake of conversation, does anyone have any suggestions as to keep any backfiring or popping under control should it arise? I was told by a friend that the ECM on the 109 adjusts itself automatically whenever you start it to compensate for restrictions in the exhaust.

So far I have had no major problems with the sound or the function of the bike. I have heard some people block some valve on their bike, is this necessary when dealing with modded exhaust?

Essentially all the exhaust is still in place, just all the baffles and plates are removed, making the once baffled canisters into a canister resembling an echo chamber that you see on trucks similar to a flow master. It even gives a little bit of that sound, which I like.

After that trying to save money is not a issue because what we have paid for our 9's we are already 3 to 4k ahead.m

Hey,

All I did was saw through the pipes. I cut them so that the pipes come just past the first exhaust mounting bracket. I did that so there would be extra support and to get behind the inner baffle plate welds (you can see these on the outside of the exhaust cans. Afterwards I used a small handgrinder with a very soft grinding head so as to keep it from making a big gouge in the grinding and ground it smooth. You could use a dremel to dress it up even further on the inside if ou wanted.

I used a saws all, but in hindsight, I would recommend using a metal bandsaw to make a slow even cut, with very little burrs left over.

In fact I think you could use tape around the pipe after making your mark where you want to cut This would help ensure no scratching occurs on the pipe. Of course you don't have to cut them as short as I did, you could leave them longer and just knock out the baffles by punching through the welds on the inside and removing the baffles, but trust me that's not as easy as it sounds.

The thing about it is you could always find some slip on exhaust tips (turn downs, etc) that are automotive exhaust tips but would look awesome on these pipes. I have found a few that I think would look awesome and really give it a custom feel.

To further answer your question, the top pipe is a chrome casing for the exhaust tube. The exhaust tube comes completely out leaving you with the outer shell and connection to the exhaust pipe. The bottom however is the steel exhaust pipe with a chrome cover on the outside, that is the only difference.

Personally I think these pipes are louder than or at least have a deeper tone than the raw tips because of the echo chamber effect. Sitting at idle you would swear it was a V-8 on an old camaro or something. when taking off and shifting hard, it's explosive reminding me of a top fuel dragster, but it mellows out into a nice throaty tone when you drop the RPM's back down and cruise.

Not everyone likes the blunt look and that's ok, personally I am growing to like it more and more and may not even add tips. To each their own I guess.

I was just curious as to what tips you used and how you fastened them? Welding?, Rivets? Would like to see a picture of the pipes with the tips if you have any!

gotta love the noise but thats all over for us here in new zealand talking to a stealer on monday cause my bikes going in to have tire fitted and asked him about the pipes to have a listen to mine to see if they will pass a warrant of fitness and he said new law is anything that hasn,t got factory mufflers wont pass he said about 95% of bikes in this country wont pass so another law in this country that stops us from expressing ourselfs. all thanks to the boy racers in there cars.

OK, NOW you have my immediate attention! You have got to share how y ou did that! Those look awesome! I love the looks of those pipes! To me those look better than the Roadhouse pipes or any other of that type!

Could you share some detail about how you fabricated those into your existing exhaust? This is what I was looking for this whole time! THANK YOU for posting these pics, now....about those directions?

OK, if you can find the how to on scorpion tip install. Follow it and install echo tips instead of scorpion tips, thats all I did, cut them to whatever lenght you like. I used 3 1/2"x18" Top one is about 17" bottom is shorter. And yes I built the air kit too, but 'BIG AIR" gets the credit for those, I just copied I'm to cheap to spend that much on an air kit.
