Default Preparations for a four hour trip.

I'm going the Lone Star Rally and I want to make sure my baby is ready to go. Can anyone give me some pointers on what I need to do to make sure she is ready? I will be changing the oil for sure, so brands and such would be a major help. It's a 2007 M109R with roughly 3300 miles on it. Very much appreciate any help and advice. Any other tips not related to this would also be appreciated as I am pretty new to riding and owning my own motorcycle. Thanks and God bless.

If you can carry, some basic tools including a 4mm allen, tire plug kit and small air compressor. make sure your tires are air properly. As far as the oil goes, lots a choices there. Just make sure it is for bikes, NOT ENERGY CONSERVING oil marks on the back of the bottle. Maybe some spare fuses. Others will chime in

The only two absolutely necessary items: cell phone and credit card
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Default Don't worry, enjoy the ride!

I'm truly not being a wise guy here...a four hour trip is really nothing. You could carry a tool chest and still not have what you need. You can't worry about things like that on a fairly minor ride. Maybe I'll get hacked to death saying that, but go and enjoy yourself and don't worry so much. The bike has low miles. If the trip was a thousand miles or more, and the bike had, say, 20,000 miles, that might be different. A tire plug kit would be all I would take.

    ps: I'm fairly new too.

You have a 07 with only 3300 miles. I would make sure those old tires are still in good shape. If you can afford it replace them before a long trip. Good Luck and ride safe.

AAA membership with m/c coverage, free towing up to 100 miles in case you get stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

Four hr ride? Hmmmmm. I'd say gas is all you need. The tire plug is a good one to have. Its good to have the tools to change your clutch cable. And the extra one under the seat. Or thread it in along side of the old one.

Four hours? Are you kidding? I do four hours all the time and take nothing with me but the things I can stuff in my pockets. I do have a spare clutch cable under the seat.

    Hi
Definitely all of the above + a 1st Aid Kit - I won't leave home without it and a puncture repair kit even on the shortest trip - it goes with the lid

Hopefuly you won't need either kit yourself but you may meet someone who does

    Enjoy the ride

    Cheers

We did a 515 mile trip this weekend. I had basic tools in my tool pack and an extra clutch cable between the 3 of us. After that, just gas and go.

I've read all the post. Changing the oil is a good thing, yet by the time I had 3,300 miles on my 9. I was on my 3rd oil change! I read no where, telling you to check your tires PSI. So check your PSI's! Oh and I did read for you to bring your credit card... Our commander and chief has us so far in debt, I think we all have enough! Bring you debt card, and if there isn't enough in there DON'T GO!

on the psi for sure. 3,300 on an 07 isn't much riding. I also agree on looking at the tires and check the date code. This sounds like a new owner of the bike. It has been sitting a lot. My 11 wishes I would sit her more!

Just over a year ago I made an "emergency" trip to Florida on my 9. It was about 550 miles down and 550 back. I left on a Tuesday afternoon and returned on Saturday. I'm happy to report that I didn't need a thing, the 9 ran perfectly and did not have a single issue. I did however (as some have mentioned) take a hex key set just in case I needed to tighten anything up. However, having said that, always better to be safe than sorry and have a few basic items.

I bet the Hardley dudes are blowing out chunks of lung laughing at this thread! 4 hrs

    Basics:
Put some "Ride On" in your tires.
    Buy an "Air Hawk".
Enjoy (that is, if you can do 4 hrs. on a 109R)

    Hahahahaha... needed that laugh.

I do 4 hr trips almot every weekend thus far. I make sure my tires are properly inflated and go through my T-CLOCKS, lol. After that I worry about the weather and gear for the elements, credit card, licensed, insurance and registration, fully charged phone and Sena. I do pack an Allen key kit and necessary wrenches just in case. From the sound, looks like I'll have to invest in a good tire plug kit and buy my extra clutch cables.

Good Luck. Hope you enjoy the RIDE!!!

    Yours Truly...

I could not help the teasing. Seriously though. This is a very reliable machine. Doing several hours poses no more risk of something going wrong than doing 20 minutes. I regularly do 12 hour day trips with out any problems. If you are just getting into the idea of doing longer trips than you are used to, you will totally enjoy it. Proper gear for the weather and you are good to go. I spend more time than I should playing on Google Maps thinking about where I could go next. There are different distances I think about depending on which bike I am thinking of taking.
If I am taking my DR650, I think about where I can park my sub and trailer near the riding area. It sucks for long distance.
If I am taking my M109R, my radius is about 200 miles if I want to stay comfortable.
If I am taking my ZX14R, i start thinking about how long it will take me to get across the country and back...
