Question Oversized oil drain plug needed for stripped oil pan

Well I unscrewed the rear oil drain plug yesterday and the oil pan threads came out with it. Now I can't tighten the plug anymore and it has a slow oil leak. I afraid to ride it now cuz I don't want it to come loose and dump the oil on the road!!

Since a new oil pan will cost $160 at Oneida I first wanted to try using an oversized self tapping oil plug but I cannot seem to find one.

    According to this chart: http://www.magneticdrainplugs.com/su...otorcycles.htm
our bikes use a 14mm x 1.25 size plug but NAPA only has these in 14mm x 1.5
I can't even find one of these with Google.

    Anybody have any good suggestions??

-Thanks in advance for your help!!

I did the exact same thing to my bike. I put a helicoil in and used the stock plug. Hope that helps you.

    Buy a helicoil kit http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...at=0&_from=R40
or take it to the shop and have it helicoiled

You guys are putting way to much on the bolts guys.

Its only oil. I've used the same setup for over 60,000 miles and no weeps. I do the same for the filter. I put it on with my hand, snug. It comes off way easy. No tools for the filter.

The bolt I just snug it to the washer. Then just check for weeps. If not, your in the ball park.
I have never changed my plug washers.

You don't have to do the bolts to spec.
What other people think of you is none of your business.

They make these in different oversizes, which you pick depending on how badly the threads are stripped. A single oversize (+1) will basically rethread the hole if there are some threads left. A double oversize (+2) will make new threads completely. So you have options, you can even use a standard 1/2" drain plug in a double (+2) and it will work just fine, making new threads as it goes. The aluminum in the pain is soft, and the oversize plugs are tapered so they start easily. In the correct 14 x 1.25 thread you would only need a single oversize to rethread it.

Some reading that may give you some tips:

I agree. I've used a +2 1/2" drain plug before. The thread pitch is almost exactly the same as the 14mm drain plug threads.

I had a stripped drain bolt in my oil pan, which was caused by a careless mechanic at the Suzuki dealer (they agreed to repair it).

The oil pan is made of aluminum and very soft, so torquing those bolts, in my view, is important.

If you decide to helicoil, you could have a metal shop do it for you.

BTW, you can easily remove the oil pan while the bike is on its side-stand.

    Thumbs up

I used the (+2) 1/2" piggy back drain plug from NAPA and it seems to be working pretty good so far. No leaks. Total cost: $6.50

I agree, been using WAY too much torque on those drain plugs. They only need to be 'snug' enough to keep them from vibrating out. I will use a much softer touch on these in the future

Thanks for all the help, you guys are awesome!!!

That's why there is a torque value for them. Might wanna try that next time.

Glad that worked out for you. I usually keep one of the 1/2" around as they will fit the drain plugs on most cars and bikes. My old Sportster has one screwed into the oil tank drain on it.
