Default What do use as a ramp to load your bike?

What are you guys using for a ramp to load your bikes into the truck or trailer.

    These bikes are heavy!!!

I need a ramp. The back of the trailer is about 24” high.
The Harbour Freight ramps all seem to be rated too lite.
    I was thinking I would make one using a 2 x 10 x 10’ wolminized with two 2 x 4 supports below on edge running the length.
Than use these plates at the top to secure it when loading the bike.
    What are your thoughts?

What is stronger, the steel or the aluminum?

What kinda trailer is it? Me personally, since you are talking 2' off the ground, I would either buy or make something wide enough to ride it up on the trailer and be able to put your feet down if needed.

IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW FAST YOU GET THERE, IT'S ABOUT THE RIDE ITSELF. TAKE YOUR TIME AND ENJOY IT!!

A bank, ditch, short wall or a store close by with a loading dock out back.

I'd get some square tube, diamond expanded steel mesh, angle iron, and some paint.

If you get something like that then you will need a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton dually. Thats alot of weight without your bike and then you add a 9 then it compounds the weight. Any ramp that is nice and heavy enough to hold the 9 without any worries is too big. Thats what puts most people off. With a trailer you need to build one that slides underneath the trailer. Wont take alot of money and wont catch the wind and waste gas. Thats what i would do.

I have the Big boy ramps for my 4x4 pickup truck from discountramps.com and they worked great. I now have a low trailer so don't use them anymore but they work very well. A 3 piece system that folds up for storage and to fit in the back of the truck or in an extended cab back seat.

depending on trailer type, (utility) and how often are u going to use it. u could build a gate out of angle iron and mesh. attach with hinges or use as a quick setup and release. save $$$ if you can do the cutting and welding.

This is what I use. Probably a little overkill. I also have the three fold HF ramp, and have used it with the Raider and seems to be no issues with being too heavy. If you are loading into a pickup truck you do need to find a hole to back the truck into, or maybe a little ledge to drive level off into the truck. Straight up into the truck off flat ground is not something that gets me real excited about doing, tho I have. But, usually you can find somewhere to back the rear wheels into while keeping the front up a bit.

This is actually the front, drive snowmobiles in here. But the back ramp is identical.

I could get four bikes in if I had to, and non of them were full dressers. Otherwise three. or two sleds.

The aluminum plates in your links would be plenty strong. Be careful with the pressure treated lumber, it gets pretty slippery when it is wet. There are plenty of videos of bike loading disasters on the WWW, you don't want to be one of them.

The Harbor Freight and like can be tricky as well, if you catch your heel or something on one of the holes backing off, normally the brakes won't hold you only slowing you down some and it is easy to tip over. I much prefer loading to unloading. Even the ski slides on my snowmobile trailer had nearly gotten me as the front tire will lock up on those without slowing you down much. I like to have two guys, one on the bike, and one behind controlling the backward motion, but I have done them myself plenty of times.

My trailer is a car hauler and it has 2 ramps like that that slide into pockets under the trailer. Not wide enought to ride up and have room to put my feet down if need be.

Smaller bikes, like the wife's Ninja or my old virago I just ride up.. but my C, I use one ramp for the bike and I walk up the 2nd ramp. I use the bike for power, so I slip the clutch while covering the front brake while walking it up.

for years I have used my (2) 8' arched 12" wide aluminum ramps for loading about every kind of bike (many as big and heavy as the M109) in the back of my F150 with no problem. The biggest problem I have found with M109's is the ground clearance. You almost need a little hill to help you in & out of the truck....
