Default Accident - Totaled by Insurance - Take payout or Salvage title ?

Back in june I had a 45mph laydown of my 109. Both sides got scratched up pretty well but the bike slid to a stop (vs slamming into anything). Figuring it was mostly cosmetic I had it taken to the dealer and filed a claim with the insurance company. They just called and said that they totaled the bike due to the damages totaling almost $10k

Bike is an '06 with about 6,000 miles on it. Looking at the estimate the big ticket items are:
    Exhaust - $1,900
    Magneto cover - $921
    Fuel Tank - $1,200
    Headlight cover $300
Front and rear fender assy - $500
Front turn signals - $200 (both)
Air cleaner covers - $186 each
Frame Grip Right and Left (? WTF ?) - $700 each

They offered me $8,700 payoff or $5,900 if I take the bike back with a salvage title. I'm in PA so I would assume there is a process for getting the title cleared later.

Thoughts ?. I have to call them back tomorrow with a decision.

Id take the payout and be done with it. 8700 will buy you a fairly new used bike with extras already on it and low miles. Ive never dealt with a salvage title but I would assume it comes with headaches

Don't know what all you have done to the 9 but, for tha payout, you could get a newer bike and start modding or, take the bike & cash & really make it your own. Depending on how bad the scratches are, just a little work and it could look better than new.

I'm guessing that if you take the bike & cash that you won't be able to get insurance on it. I think that's the case in some areas. If that's the case, taking total cash may be the better choice.

I can get just liability on it with a salvage title here in PA according to the agent.

Thats a tough decision. 5900.00 mod money to make it really cool. As long as you could be sure there isnt any frame damage you could do alot. You would have to deal with the tilte crap, it could turn into more hassle than its worth.

On the otherhand even if it were in perfect condition you wouldnt be able to get 8700 out of an '06 IMO. You could pick up an 07 or 08 with low miles and start over, I mean, thats half the fun, right?

I would probably start over, I dont think it would be worth the hassle to me, but thats just me......

Quite honestly mods were minimal on it (grips, ebay mirrors, new levers, aftermarket rear signals and plate bracket) so it was mostly stock.

Take the money and run. Start over fresh. If there is any salvageable aftermarkets on it you can take off and put the stock stuff back on, do it.

IMO, if you do not owe anything on the bike and you can get a check for $8,700.00, take the money to the bank. Heck, that would be a pretty darn good down payment on a 2012 model at Romney Cycles in WV.

That's just their website value. Usually, they do much better than that. I've been half considering something new too.

Cash. No brainer. If an emergency ever came up and you had to sell the bike, it would be an almost impossible sell with a salvaged title.

Great point. I think that alone makes it a no brainer?

and if you were to take the $5900.00 and mod your bike with only being able to insure with liability,What happens if you mod it out and wreck? = no bike at all. Take the CASH and start looking for a new bike.

You have another option depending on how bad the bike is damaged, how mechanically inclined you are and how much free time you have.

You could take the bike and the $5,900. Put the $5,900 down on a new/new used bike, then part out the wrecked bike to make up the money and then make some extra money for mods. Depending on how much is damaged and how bad you might be able to make some good money off parting the wrecked bike.

Would obviously take some time and patience, but is definitely an option.

It sounds like most of the major pieces of the bike have damage and are of little part out value. Take the payout and move on.
