As Mel Gibson once screamed in Braveheart, "FREEDOM!!!!!"

I've tried to read every word and opinion on here with an open mind. I live in AZ where no helmet is required for adult riders, just eye protection. I have several halves, 3/4, and fulls. I wear the full when it's cold, which isn't often here. And, there are many times when I go for a short ride with no helmet (Sorry, I love having the choice and it is a great feeling--just like having the choice to ride a dangerous motorcycle and the great feeling that accompanies riding). But, most of the time I don one of my half helmets and I am seriously considering one of the slim ones like Big-B wears in his sig pic. I want to be just like him--without the handlebars, though.

I do not agree with one of the comments that "1/2 helmets...etc are all 100% completely useless if you go down." Really? that just simply is not true. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that full face helmets are the safest way to protect your head and face in the event of an accident. But to state that a half helmet is "useless" or will provide no protection is fiction. Basically you're stating that every bicycle helmet is 100% useless if a cyclist goes down, and every cyclist should be wearing a full face helmet.

After reading all the variations of "anything less than a full face helmet is just stupid" comments, I wondered why the police force only wear 3/4 helmets. Any thoughts? Or is that only in AZ where you have to drive your car with oven mitts to avoid serious burn injury.

Perhaps it's so they can look cool.

I really appreciate the thoughtful comments and convictions of those dedicated to wearing full face helmets. But, there is, and should be, a fundamental choice of deciding whether and how much protection one chooses to wear when riding. There are many persuasive arguments for always wearing a full face helmet. However, I'll say it again, it is a great feeling to go for a ride with the wind in the face--even in the hair. I like doing it. Just like I like riding motorcycles and racing karts, and cars and bicycles. We have a trampoline and I don't think I am a bad father becasue I allow my kids to have fun for hours at the risk of serious head, neck or back injury.

Be carefull how hard you advocate for certain protective measures--some would like to outlaw motorcycle riding altogether--that's what my mother would prefer, for sure. And, all our pretty faces, and smart brains wouldn't be subject to the risks of riding.

Be alert and enjoy the ride.

Not sure. Evidence, whether scientific or not is pretty cool stuff. But scientific evidence is especially exciting to nerds--like me.

    Well stated.

For those who wish to outlaw the Freedoms and Liberties of others-watch out what you wish for, it can come back too bite you in the ass. A 'perfect' world is a controlled world...Who wants someone or group of people with that power?

WELL YOU ARE PUTTING IT UNDER WRONG POSTS. i could care less what anybody wears. its your right to wear one, or half, 3/4 or full i am saying its your choice . NOBody HAS NO RIGHT TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO. AND TO THE ONE THAT his wife sees only what it is to see if you dont wear a full face. ask her what else she sees. people with there heads blowed off, trees that fall on heads. Not just say full face because any nurse in er sees much more than that.

    Default Personal choice

A valid reason for wearing a half helmet is they don't make your fancy arai, icon or others in 5xl man size with a big brain. I had to get custom made IE remove padding to wear football helments in high school. Feel free to post a link to 8.5 size helmet in a round shape and maybe you have a point. I can hammer a 3xl on but can't see over my cheeks or breath so not really an option. I also ride in shorts and a tshirt and sandals because it's MY choice. Why do people have to try to tell others what's best? Ride your own ride and do what YOU want but don't tell me what is best for me!

If you speed on a motorcycle in your full face then your full vs half argument is invalid because your riding unsafe........according to the law so might as well wear the half or none. A tire could blow, a bird could hit you, road could have a sink hole or buckled pavement, animals... Spend your life worrying or just ride in what you like best! To each there own and yes maybe the lack of padding in my football helmet caused some brain damage!

Ps yes I have tried a hole in the bottom of a microwave strapped to my head.

I'm in support of full face helmets and the clothing, but I agree with everything you just said. Your choice, and that's the good thing about this country. We are free to do a lot even with all the laws out there. So, that being said, I still think you're crazy!

It is a personal choice, but if you go down I'm pretty certain your choices will change. Going down on asphalt is a definate wake up call even at low speed. It seems that it's mostly the guys who have been down who wear all the gear, including a full face helmet.
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I said "pretty certain" not "without a doubt". There'll always be some slow learners out there

I'm going to revert back to my cycling experiences. I have been down more than once on the blacktop and it really, really sucks. Both times it was while riding in a pack and several of us went down at over 25mph. That is not that fast, but the road rash sucks, and that is why many cyclist shave their legs; not to look sexy, but to avoid hair rash healing issues, in the rare event of a crash.

Having said that, cyclist don't wear leather pants and other heavy protective gear "just in case." Yet, nannies would surely attempt to legislate it, and probably have.

Wear what you are comfortable wearing. Educate and persuade but be tolerant of others rights and beliefs--we all do accasional dumb things, which helps in natural selection.

Well this is a pic of half helmet after hitting a deer and going down. It was two weeks ago tomorrow me and my dad where coming back from south bend IN. Ten miles from home and a deer jumped out in front of him. He didnt even see it. He was going around 50mph when it happen. The bike went down on the left side and slid down the road and dad hit on his left side of his helment cracking it and knocking him out. He slid face down for 35 to 45 feet. He has a 3in cut on his head and had two bleeds in his brain, fractured upper jaw, broken scapula, 7 broken ribs, and bruises and road rash.. All that and he is doing very well he is home now and up and walking around. And he is 63 years old and has been riding a bike for 45 years.. The helment saved his life. I think a full face would of been better but at less he had one on.

Thanks for sharing and I hope he heals up quickly. Scary stuff. Glad the half helmet wasn't "100% useless." Sounds and looks like it did a great job of protect him.

Send him our best wishes for a quick recovery.

What's interesting about this thread is the OP never said that wearing a half or 3/4 helmet was a bad thing. he just stated that a full face was better in a crash. Lot's of dialog later no one is refuting that wearing a full face is a better idea in the event of a crash. At the end of the day it is all about risk. How much is acceptable is an individual decision. It's human nature to believe that anyone willing to take more risk than oneself is fool hardy. That is an individual's perspective.

Whether or not we should legislate that people should wear a helmet should have a thread of it's own.
    That's a different subject.
I'm glad to see the helmet did it's job.

Im 100% about freedom to choose. So here is an update to the post. I thought it was one of my uncles buddies. The rider was his brother my other uncle. Man do I feel stupid I missed that in the original text I got.

That said my one uncle G has been down on his bike a few times and wears full gear. He is a guy that will anoye / push you into wearing proper gear. Now my other uncle C the driver that crashed wears a half helmet. When he arrived in Vancouver where this happened. My uncle G bugged and made his brother uncle C wear the full face helmet in the picture. Just before the wipe out he was talkin about how much he did not like the full face helmet. I have now talked to him and when he went down he hit a cement curb. He also credits his life to his brother for making him wear the helmet in the photo. He truely believes he would have died without it.

That said its your choice half full just wear a helmet lol.

If he wasn't complaining about the full face he would have had his full concentration on the road and would have avoided the crash. Therefore the full face caused his crash. Ergo full face helmets are dangerous and should be against the law.

I just thought I'd say it before someone else does.
