    Default Quick release backrest

I just bought a 2011 m109 and love the clean look without the backrest My kids are always asking for a ride but I dont feel comfortable without a backrest. The dealership has ordered two different ones and have called me to tell me they did not fit because it was the quick release type. Does anyone know what a safe backrest that is easy to take off when I dont have a passenger and is the grab bar combo better for kids?
Thanks to anyone that can help as dealership has been horrible and acts like they are doing me a huge favor by letting me spend my money there.

first off welcome to the fourm, and kudos to you for never riding with the kidds without a back rest, I watched a 12 year old go tumbling off a harley because dad didnt think a backrest was needed. Made me sick, the site sponser has plenty of choices for backrests. and the guys here will steer you in the right choice for you.

EDIT: stay away from the dealers they are clueless

The grasshopper backrest is pretty quick. One allen screw and if you dont do a lot of shifting I'd say you could probably get away with not tightening the allen down during your rides. It'll slip right out. Quality is descent but price is excellent.... less than 100 bucks. Hard to beat.

    Default Thanks for quick response

I thought I read somewhere that Jardines had some sort of malfunction where someone had luggage strapped to the backrest and it broke off. Thankfully it was only luggage. I appreciate everyones quick response as I felt helpless working with the dealership. Glad I found this website as with the dealership it felt like being in a town with one lousy restaurant, if I wanted to eat out than I had to have lousy food. I will check with the site sponser.

    Thanks Again

This is the Jardine one that I will be getting soon. Love the fact that my Boulevard backrest will fit on it.

    Jardine here too, no issues

IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW FAST YOU GET THERE, IT'S ABOUT THE RIDE ITSELF. TAKE YOUR TIME AND ENJOY IT!!

I am in Mass as well. I am looking to do some Mods but as you can tell I have been very unhappy with the dealership. They put some custom grips on and one has a huge gap. Customer service has been horrible as they just don't care. Can you or anyone in Mass recomend a place that is experianced with the M109 for some Mods I want to do. Thanks

That was me, happened on the way home from the 2009 MAM, Seapup was with me and saw it. I cannot find my pictures of it...

See this pic from Big-B, just below the two bolts for the backrest itself and just above the top of the side handle BOTH sides RIPPED like paper from front to back...

Jardine products I compare to the crap that comes out of a JCWhitney catalog or the majority of crap Harbor Freight sells... IMnsHO...

The set up looks awesome but until I research it with Jardine and they can assure me any problem was corrected, I cant chance having my kids using a potentially faulty product. Thanks again to everyone who replied to help me out!

Don't know where you are but my dealer, so far, has treated me fair and the mechanic seems up on things. My only complaint was that they had my bike for a week at a time each on engine guard install and first service. I also have an 11. They're Suzuki of Swansea on Rt 6

2011, Candy Indy Blue. I call her Cinderella...in the beginning, I had to be in before sunset. Not falling totally for the mod trap, just minor looks. She's plenty of bike, and I like it the way it is. I'll hit 13,000 after MAM, and working on a lot more.

Not sure it's worth that trip...you'll find another up there, I'm sure.

Dude I was out the door in just under 2 hours for my break in service and I spent at least 15+ talking to the technician after he was done just about basic questions being new to the 9 and all. A week for either of those is abysmal! lol

robert109 - welcome and congrats on the purchase, I think you'll find this site to be a great resource and will really help you do most maintenance all by yourself if you are up for it.

As far as the sissy bar, I thought about the quick detachable style but I plan to just leave it on my bike so I went with the Cobra Round Sissy Bar and also their formed luggage rack. I will have pics soon, but I haven't put it on the bike yet. Here's the factory photo... the biggest difference by far with a quick detach vs one like this Cobra? PRICE! You can get the Cobra for about $220 shipped and the thing is diesel, really beefy. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

Default Another vote for the Jardine quick release back rest.

I wouldn't buy one older than 2009 but mine has worked great for two years now without problems. Before I bought I read every post on this site on the issue. They are making them pretty sturdy now. I don't know I would be comfortable with a kid on the back, backrest or not. They don't still in a car, why would they be any better on a bike?
