    Default V & H Big Shots Question

Going down to OH tonight to pick up my 9 Saturday. Was looking through the instrutions for my V & H Big Shots last night.............I see they make reference to retaining the EXUP system?? I thought that got the toss with the stock exhaust? According to the instructions......I remount the EXUP device onto the V & H supplied exhaust mount plate (d@mn! could they have made it any heavier?!), after installing a different cam in the EXUP. Is the EXUP different from, or related to the SET I've frequently seen reference to in these forums?

The Big Shots are coveed from stem to stern with heat shields. Looks like a lot of extra weight on an already severely overweight bike to me. Any of you BS users NOT put the heat shields on (especially the head pipe shields)? Any heat issues (on your leg or foot) from not running the HSs?

    Thanks!

You can leave the whole set valve off and undo the #7 pin from the ecu. There is a write up about how to do it. Let me know if you don't have it and if not, give me your email and I can send it to you.

As far as the weight, there is not that much difference with the shields. Put them on and enjoy it I ran those pipes for 3 years and loved them.

Just take the whole SET mess off of the bike and follow the link Bernie posted.

LOL! So, the EXUP is what you guys refer to as the SET. That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure before I started trashing **** off the bike (de beavering and de badging coming up soon--I guess the heat we're blessed with in MI right now will come in handy on Sunday!). Sounds like that'll be easier than goofing around with the EXUP/SET and bolting it back onto the bike anyway. I had reviewed the how to in your link above, while I was in Israel that last couple days......I'll be taking the notebook out to the garage and referring to that article while I'm working on swapping the exhaust out! Gotta get ahold of Trackday today, and see about exchanging my TRE for an ATRE too.

Where do the EXUP/SET cables run to on the other end? I assume most of you disconnected the cable there. and tossed them with the EXUP/SET? Thanks again!

Just leave them unplugged or cut. They must have changed the pipes as mine had nothing about plugging anything in. I just got rid of the Set, pulled the pin and off I went.

Harris has the Freedom pipes now.

I put the new freedom pipes on about 3 weeks ago. It was just time for a change and the price was too good to pass up.

You will be left with 2 connectors on the bike. I just took black electrical tape and taped them up. I then tucked them in behind the frame right where the tre plugs into.

Roger that! I remember seeing a reference to those two connectors in the V & H instructions.................I'll likely do the same as you with them. Thanks!

    Flanker.....

Those are the pipes I am looking at as well so I will be watching you on this one.

One question. If the instructions say to re-use the SET valve I am assuming there is some sort of hole/access panel or whatever in the pipe that it gets mounted into. So if you leave the SET valve off how is that hole dealt with? I have never seen one of these pipes yet so I may be asking a really stupid question here.

There is no hole. The set valve is a box that is attached to the bracket on the stock pipes. It has cables that open and close the valve that is inside the pipes. ALL aftermarket pipes eliminate this since there is no cat convertor. They offer mounting hardware and an aftermarket cam to put in the motor part and put back on. The motor part goes on the bracket and has nothing to do with the pipes at all. From that motor, you plug back into the stock connectors and the cam inside fools the ecu to think the set valve is there. When you eliminate it totally, you leave it off, tape up the connectors on the bike and tuck away. Then you can cut or pull out one wire from the ecu and it will never have an FI light relating to the exhaust.
