View Full Version : Sideburner Baffle

I'd made a baffle for my sideburner, from a baffle I had taken out of a 4 into 1 header for my GS1000.

I had to trim it down to 8 1/2 inches long so it would make the bend around the end of the Sideburner tube. This baffle is also re-packable. I think I packed it too tight, and changed the sound too much. I am going to try it with less packing. T-Rod heard it, and didn't like the pitch, or resonance it made.

The baffle I had was the same outside diameter as the Sideburner pipe. I had it cut down a bit smaller than the inside diameter, and had a nut welded onto the edge. The bolt hole is on the back side of the Sideburner pipe.

I am trying to attach pictures of the baffle next to the Sideburner, a pic from the side, and a pic by a ruler. I also have a pic of my GS1000.

This is simply sharing of my general information. However, you are allowed to comment if you wish.
Please keep "slow", and "old turd" comments about my bike to a minimum. :D

Okay, I'll try this.

Your bike is not just slow, it's like slower than slow if slow was slower than the slowest of all time.

Turd? OMG! It sounds like a turd, makes less power than a turd set on fire and could barely keep up with a turd floating through the sewer system.

That's about as minimum as I could muster.:P

Really glad you kept it to a minimum.

Anyone else with a real coment, and not a T-Rod comment?? :joke:

Kenny,
My wife didn't enjoy riding with me when it was so loud. I work 60-80 hours a week, so when I'm off, I would like to combine two things together ,,, riding my bike, and being with my wife.

Honestly, I like the noise, and the attention the sideburner gets me, but having her along with me is more fun.

HaHa, and you thought I was too old, if it was too loud.

Az,
Turd pretty much describes T-Rod. It is one of his favorite words.

hey good looking out with the pics. hopefully this will get me to pass inspection over here. got a few more questions for you though. now you state its repackable. what material did you use to pack it? second what is the circumference of the tube? i know that the inside of the pipe is a little over two inches. third do you have a pic or can explain how the exit or the back plate looks. i know the smartparts baffle just has the metal going straight through dividing the pipe. how does your baffle look as your looking into the pipe.

I put non baffled cobras on mine and it's so effing loud, wife came for a ride and said I don't like the sound, so I said well use ear plugs or stay off!!!!
So now I ride the bike and the wife!!!!

Win win, bikes are a great way to escape the world by wearing a lid and just being in your own little world.
Take that awful baffle and throw it in the bin, when wife asks why just say its your bike and if she must join in she can buy earplugs.

unfortunately i just dont have that luxury. In germany you have to pass a sound test before they issue you tags. if your pipes are 95 decibels or lower your pretty much aint gonna ride.

I've added some more pics to show both ends of the baffle.

I am going to use fiberglass insulation to wrap my baffle this time, instead of the asbestos header wrap I used last time.
Let me know if there are any more questions ,,, John.

I just think the ID of the baffle is too small. I think you're choking the living snot out of it.

Fiberglass won't last long.

Was the header wrap to much? Made it to quite? Make sure you get some decent fiberglass material made for baffling, its gonna burn out regardless but the better material prolongs the replacement intervals.

You know, after thinking about it, you may be correct. (And you know how hard that is to admit). That baffle is made for a 750 - 1100 cc engine, more or less. 1800 cc may be way more than it will evacuate properly.
I will try it first with no packing, and see how it reacts. But for being quieter, it may help pass the sound emissions test.

I know the fiberglass doesn't last long, but it is easily re-packed. In my 1000 it would last a month.

I say don't even mess around with poor packing or that baffle. Make a new one with a larger ID. You can either use a bit of exhaust tube and just drill a bunch of holes in it and weld the rings onto the end of it or you might be able to buy a length of perforated tube of a larger diameter that is made for the purpose. Or you could have some expanded metal rolled into a tube.

I don't know what size the tube is now or what the ID of the sideburner is but if you could get a 3" baffle in there that would help.

It's a no wonder it only made like 18 HP on the dyno. If you know it's wrong, then fix that turd.

dont they use stainless steel packing in most newer pipes?

Don't know, I would be worried about the heat it would absorb and radiate thru the outside pipe wall.
