View Full Version : Make your own lowering bones

Well I made up some bones last night and I did some calculating as I went. It seems as thought the ratio is roughly the same as it is on the M50's, 1/8" longer center to center equates to a 1/2" drop. I went 3/8" which installed on bike gave me a 1 1/2" drop. I'm happy with that for now but will probably go lower...

If anyone is interested here is a quick jpeg of a cad drawing for the bones...

Just curious, but how much money is invested in materials?

Dont forget the CNC Machine.

About 10-12 bucks in aluminum and an hour and a half of my time....

No need for a CNC unless I was gonna make a large quantity.

And maybe some sand paper.:joke: But seriously, I'm very interested to know how that is done without at least a milling machine.

milling attachment on a cheep little 112 volt lathe would work just fine.

Yea, I guess that would do it. I hadn't considered that possibility. I guess it pays to have one of those around. I used to work in a machine shop in the Coast Guard, so I could have made just about anything I needed. But don't have access to that equipment anymore. I do miss that job.

Actually, I am a tool-maker in a major stamping facility and have access to all the equipment I need. Just a perc of the trade I guess

I remember the first set of those was basically a piece of flat steel with a couple bushings welded to it. Yours look much better.:bigthumbsup:

I have the machine shop that I work at making me a few different sizes. Still need to come up with an adjustable set ... seen some Heim joint types for the rockets available ..... might need to play with those.

Are thinking of selling us mere mortals some of those? 1 1/2 inch is about all my spine wants ;)

Not for resale , could trade however ... besides , selling parts on this site is a no no unless used ....

The adjustable ones are of interest as everyone has some concerns about what size to get , with an adjustable set you can play with it all you like , lengthen them if you are taking the girlfriend for a ride and shorten when you get home to the wife if needed .

Smear some grease on 'em.... voila!

USED parts...

What could we "trade?" I do graphics, web and all that good stuff.

I have some green paper with pictures of dead presidents on them that I can trade, lol. Honestly, I have nothing to trade except a new fullface modular helmet that is too tight for me.

HI Fat black, saw your diagram and thought it was very enlightning, can you just confirm both bones have the same hole dia's ie 27mm 14mm , are the holes just drilled or honed, reamed out. I take it you just transfer the bush from your old bones to the 27mm hole in both off your new bones.I have also saw new bones that have removed the large hole and just drilled a standard 14mm? hole for the bush end as wel. Has anyone got any feedback on the fitment of these, ( ie do you really need to refit the bush?).
Cheers.

@ Fatblack,
Question from Europe, to be on the safe side.
Are those dimensions in inches, and just the holes listed in milimeters? Or is it all in mm's?
Thanks and best regards, from the Netherlands,
Danman

Hey Nathan, yes both links are the same. I used a 14 mm drill on the one and reamed the other to 27 mm so the original bush is a nice slip fit. In my opinion the bushing is there for a reason so if you are making them yourself, why not allow for it?

Hi Dan, yes all dimensions are in inches except for the hole diameters...

Thanks for PDF file, Will make mine this week. Did you use 6061 or 7075 Aluminum? Inch / metric it can all be converted. Chips will be flyin

Just so everyone who wants to make these knows, these dimensions for the hole diameters require you to remove the whole bearing from the bike side of the bones when installing. If you order bones, you will only have to use the "sleeve" of the bearing. With this diameter, you will have to "drive" out the pressed bearing and press it back into the new bone. Not all that hard to do, but if you follow the how-to on the bones install, you will get frustrated at how easy the other install is. The dimensions worked perfectly for me, but there was many a cuss word flying around when it came time to beat the crap out of that bushing to get it out!
